Okay, so I am making a Steel Legion army. My issue is what should I use to seperate my veterans from my Infantry Platoon? Any ideas?

Proposed so far:
-Using Storm Troopers as Vets
-Using SL as Vets, Cadians (possibly modified with Pig Iron Heads) as Infantry Platoon
-Using SL for both, possibly detail one differently.
- Using Valhallans as Infantry, Steel Legion as Vets.
- Using DKoK as Vets, SL as Infantry (Too Expensive)

???
Thank you guys in advance!

I'm always for useing Death Korps, however I've seen Vets made out of standard infantry, just with extra bits on them.

i also use color differences. my Vets look like the have everything the need to fight and rebuild an engine with as much crap i give them. but i also
have black helmets for my Vets. you could mix tunics or pant colors.

I think a different paintjob is sufficient.

DK look way too different methinks for steel legion (french uniform vs fallschirmjager)

During WWII the US (and most of the rest of the allies) changed their uniforms and equipment standards many times. This led to MANY field units seeing fluxes in new equipment deliveries and fresh recruits with the "latest" gear. The result was that older, "veteran" troops would have a smattering of equipment from different issues.

A good way to show this on Steel Legion is simply painting them slightly different colors from the rest. Instead of Catachan Green for coats, use Camo Green (it also looks more worn and faded) or some mixture in between. Add more equipment to the rest of your army (a hallmark of less veteran troops is the carrying of unneeded equipment into combat. Like a sleeping bag or rations). This way the vets look slimmer and trimmer, more dynamic compared to the over laden FNGs.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

I agree with the slightly different paintjob. Making them dirtier and with scratches in the armor's paint, extra equipment, etc.

Otherwise, the only good alternate model line (unless you've got a winter theme with the rest of the army) would be DKoK or vostroyan models.

how about a smattering of different weapon loadouts maybe try to find alternative lasguns or something this could be from an earlier issue as was already states or veteran troops picking up better weapons on the battlefield, the inquisitors might not be happy but if the enemies guns work better/shoot further who's going to argue?

or mark the veterans with different paintjobs for the guns like wooden stacks for example, a trooper might go to the lenghts of buying/carving a wooden stock for his gun rather that the wire one he was issued with

I suggest converted SL, unless you don't like converting metal.
Just veteran them right up. Warlord games just put out a set of plastic WW2 Germans that has lots of awesome gear bits and bobs, including a head with a field cap which would look good in a vet squad IMO.

I will probably end up doing a different paint scheme on them probably, as well as adding some detail to their clothes and such....

On a side note, anyone know where I could possibly get some WW2 wheeled Pak gun mounts for cheap? Specifically just the wheeled ones for a conversion with my SL.

I'd go for painted embellishments on helmets or other prominent places, perhaps some extra insignia in a particular place to tie all the veterans together.

Quality is a pretty low on the black tree stuff.

Thanks for those, I was looking at the Warlord Games one for a bit. but the others are new to me. I need to make sure it still fits on the HWT Bases that come with the legion troops, I have been thinking of possibly making some out of a sprue and some extra wheels possibly.

Heh 1/35 guns are cheap. A little big but they'll look good for artillery pieces

From the Pak gun auction:

"Description: German Pak 35/36 37mm Anti-Tank Gun. WW II. Includes: four (4) figures."

Think its going to be too big as a base or too small?
