HAVANA – Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba's communist economic model doesn't work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago.

The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel's brother Raul, the country's president, has said the same thing repeatedly. But the blunt assessment by the father of Cuba's 1959 revolution is sure to raise eyebrows.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, asked if Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog.

He said Castro made the comment casually over lunch following a long talk about the Middle East, and did not elaborate. The Cuban government had no immediate comment on Goldberg's account.

Since stepping down from power in 2006, the ex-president has focused almost entirely on international affairs and said very little about Cuba and its politics, perhaps to limit the perception he is stepping on his brother's toes.

Goldberg, who traveled to Cuba at Castro's invitation last week to discuss a recent Atlantic article he wrote about Iran's nuclear program, also reported on Tuesday that Castro questioned his own actions during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, including his recommendation to Soviet leaders that they use nuclear weapons against the United States.

Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba has clung to its communist system.

The state controls well over 90 percent of the economy, paying workers salaries of about $20 a month in return for free health care and education, and nearly free transportation and housing. At least a portion of every citizen's food needs are sold to them through ration books at heavily subsidized prices.

President Raul Castro and others have instituted a series of limited economic reforms, and have warned Cubans that they need to start working harder and expecting less from the government. But the president has also made it clear he has no desire to depart from Cuba's socialist system or embrace capitalism.

Fidel Castro stepped down temporarily in July 2006 due to a serious illness that nearly killed him.

He resigned permanently two years later, but remains head of the Communist Party. After staying almost entirely out of the spotlight for four years, he re-emerged in July and now speaks frequently about international affairs. He has been warning for weeks of the threat of a nuclear war over Iran.

Castro's interview with Goldberg is the only one he has given to an American journalist since he left office.

Of course it is failing. It is merely a political stage in the grand scheme of things. Communism isnt meant to work long term, by Karl Marx's own admission.
The biggest failing of communism is the government getting comfortable with its position and refusing to let the leadership return to the people.

Its all part of a cycle. Socialism leads to capitalism which leads back to socialism, etc. No single form of economy works on its own without a bit of change.

This however:

Was entirely necessary and added so much value to the discussion.

You mean he might have been ill.. hmm... who knows....

Well... looks like soft power does work then.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I think they need to reassess their position in the world by adopting some free market reforms and democracy. However, do you think that would actually help?

A little bit of free market has always worked wonders.

Places such as North Korea and Vietnam enjoyed rapid growth of food provision and other small scale business once people were allowed to set up market stalls and sell things to each other.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Wait...when did they send over spies to our country to learn of such technological secrets?

Clearly the bigger issue is the national security lapses we have. We have not had a slip up of this magnitude since the Manhattan Project when we practically gave nuclear weapon technology to the Russians for free.

Now we have North Koreas going to Manhattan Island learning how to capitalize on the bartering system. MADNESS!

EDIT: To be fair, we did steal Manga and Anime from the Japanese.

The actual quote is:

"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore,"

The implication of this statement being that it did work at some point, but no longer does. It may also be a statement regarding the government being to extensively involved in the economy, as his aid suggested in the source article, but such a statement wouldn't be relevant to thee US given the massive gap between the government control of Cuba's economy and the government control of the US economy.

As always, it helps to actually read the source material. Of course, Frazzled will never do that, because he only wants to make himself feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Excited actually. Now they can relax on a new warm tropical climate, after a day's work of burning heretics is done.

According to P J O'Rourke, Cuba is seething with knockout women.

Back on topic...
The truth is that both Cuba's and North Korea's economies were sustained by trading on artificial terms with the Soviet Union and Red China and their associated power blocs.

In much the same way, Israel's economy has been sustained by aid from the USA, or Spain's and Ireland's economies have been sustained by aid from Germany, France and the UK.

It isn't something unique to Cuba and as in Cuba, once the aid is curtailed, the true facts of the situation tend to become clear.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Since you chose to address only the snarky portion of my comment, I think its reasonable to infer that you didn't read the source material. In fact, I'm willing to bet you didn't even read the yahoo article. You probably read the headline, concluded what you wanted to conclude, and then used the magic of copypasta in order to present an argument which isn't supported by your sources.

Can I just clear something up here?

you're a little off on your definitions, in Marxist thought communism is a classless stateless society (I.E anarchy*), socialism is the translational phase in between communism and capitalism. communism is intended to work long term, socialism is not.
(p.s this is why communists don't call the USSR or china communist they were socialist republics)
sorry if a seem a bit annoyed in the post but communism is such a misrepresented ideology that I have to set things straight.

*the only difference between an anarchist and a communist is whether you think this state is necessary, anarchist say all forms of the state are unjustifiable, communists view it as a necessary evil.
