I'm a new fantasy player and I am confused about the steadfast special rule and how it works with the skaven strength in numbers special rule.

A unit that is steadfast 'takes its break test on its unmodified leadership' (pg 54 wfrb) Would that mean that the skaven units couldn't receive the benefits of their SIN special rule? If you go by solid rules then i think that you wouldnt get the positive modifiers, but in the fluff bit of the Steadfast rule it talks about outnumbering the foe, which is the basis of the SIN rule.

what do you guys think?

SiN can be used for steadfast, it was in the FaQ.

The errata states the SiN can be added to any leadership based test. This is all the permission you need to ignore the "unmodified" part.

Sorry if I hijack the thread.

But can they use the Generals LD + SiN for the test or do they use their own? (I don't play skaven but I want to know before I go to a tournament)

General+SiN... Skaven are pretty nuts now when it comes to huge steadfast blocks. a big block of 40 slaves held up 300ish points of daemonnettes for 3-4 turns.

Steadfast is one of those rules that im wondering if was really thought through all the way. 50 slaves (at 100 points) holding up 300 point units alll game is wow....

This is why there's still tactics in fantasy, they're just different then they used to be. For example, now, you actually have to shoot/magic/whatever those slaves before they set up that devastating lockdown charge. FWIW, it's not the fact that they lock you down (they die SO fast that steadfast is usually gone in a turn or two) it's that on that next turn, while you're locked in place, I come along and drop a warpfire thrower on you. THAT is the devastating part. Again though, combined arms tactics aren't always easy to pull off. You just have to see it coming and take steps to deal with it.

8th ed is, like 5th ed 40k, about making your army WORK TOGETHER.

In 7th ed you could have one or two big monsters killing stuff, while the rest denied VPs. Now, you cant.

Even "Test on the units unmodified LD" is pretty ambiguous, and it's not actually addressed in the Skaven FAQ like people are saying (Skaven FAQ just changes a couple words around in the first sentence so that every Skaven unit doesn't get SiN). They do, however, clear it up quite nicely in the BRB FAQ -

Change the first paragraph to “If a defeated unit has more
ranks than its enemy, it takes a Break test without applying the
difference in the combat result scores.” Change the fourth
paragraph to “Steadfast units don’t apply the difference in
combat result scores to Break tests.”
