So I've been a 40k player for some time now, and Battlefleet Gothic constantly calls to me. So here's what I'm lookin' for, Dakka.

First, does anyone know any good websites with a compilation of information on the various fleets?

Does anyone know a good, inexpensive-ish (at least, cheaper than GW) source for the actual minis?

And... what should I know, getting into BFG?

I'm going into this one cold.

The only things I know about BFG so far are:
1) It involves capital ship fleet actions in the 40k universe, and
2) The Tyranid and Necron fleets look cool as all hell.

I'm currently primarily a Tau player in 40k, but I have no clue how the various 40k factions cross over into BFG. Are the Tau still shooty? Do Orks like to ram the living crap out of your ships? I just don't know.

So, inform this ignorant soul, please.

Kind of in the same boat as you. I purchased and read through the rulebooks a while back but have never played a game or bought/assembled/painted any of the models. The Tau stuff available from GW is crap compared to the ForgeWorld stuff, IMO. Take a look if you haven't already.

Until very recently, a website called Port Maw was your best source for BFG discussion and info. It was either hacked hard or C&D'd by GW in the late great BB purges. There is an e-zine called Warp Rift with pretty high production value that you can look at here. Otherwise, you'll have to hunt through the usual fora.

I've seen both, and I think I actually prefer the GW Tau BFG stuff to the FW stuff.

While the FW stuff better fits the general aesthetic of Tau ground vehicles, the GW stuff has that very practical, minimalist feel that the Tau exude in spades. That's more what I enjoy about the Tau. So I don't mind GW's Tau BFG models.

As for the e-zine, I'll have to take a look at it. Many thanks for the link.

And I just downloaded and printed the BFG rulebook and the rules for Tau, Necron, and Tyranid fleets (one of those three will likely be the one I choose to play).

There are rumors of rumors that GW will start supporting BFG again, maybe even with a new starting set. But if I were you, I'd just watch eBay. Actually, I'd just buy from GW.

The FW Tau fleet is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR cheaper then the GW Tau fleet.
Lets say the GW costs more then double!

The GW site contains all pdf's. So no need to buy the rulebooks.

The FAQ2010 is on its way.

GothiComp painting competition is currently in the final voting round (www.tacticalwargames.net).

Oddness with GW: Armada is no longer available and the rumour for a re-release. Alas.

The Nid fleet is the scratchbuild fleet.

Necrons are different. The Tombship is considered over the top by many. I never faced it so dunno.

And, I know some things about the ezine, lol, next issue at the end of september.

Port Maw has been hacked to the max. Pity as it contains the biggest wealth of info regarding BFG.

Oh, another question - are the GW BFG models plastic or metal? It doesn't say on the GW website.

Tau kinda sucked IIRC. Any other race is better.

What if I'm a huge raving Tau fanboi, and I don't plan on playing competitively?

Then you will probably end up happier than not. Play what you want to play!

All of the models are metal except for the Imperial and Chaos cruisers, which are plastic.

Correct from field mouse. Of course Tau from Forgeworld are in resin.

On the Tau
lol lol lol lol

To start with: yes fun play is more important.

To follow:
The GW Armada Tau list is awesomely strong (adepticon winner). Explorers, Heroes and Orca's.
A really good fleet if handled well.

The FW Tau fleet is a real good raider fleet. Under 1000pts better then the GW list. My win-run is really good with them.

Tau are good, any fleet of them. Not overpowered. They have weak spots. But you'll need to be a good admiral if you want to exploit them against an equal skilled admiral.

So kamikaze canuck is wrong. Very wrong.

I was drawn into BFG because of 40K as well.

I have a 2000 point Deathwing army and thought, hey, how do my Terminators and Ravenwing bikers get transported all over the galaxy anyway?

I have two SM Battle Barges already and this week am planning to order in three SM Strike Cruisers and a few Gladius-class escorts.

Then they're totally for you. Thing is they're kinda boring. Instead of having guns on the side of their ship they have "gravity hook thingys" which allow you to have 1 escort per. Personally I'd like a giant laser cannon there but that's just me.

I didn't even realize there was a seperate list for FW and GW. That's pretty weird. What's the book the Forge World one in is called?

They were in Imperial Armor Volume 3, and before the site re-design they were free for download as well. They were taken down when the FW site was re-designed this spring, but Travisi was kind enough to repost them:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/290063.page

I play the GW tau myself, and the reason they are so expensive is that all of their ships are large metal models, which meant they were $30-35 dollars when I bought them a few years ago. Given the exchange rates, that makes the resin FW models cheaper! One thing I can recommend regardless of which list you decide to use is to take a Demiurg Stronghold. They are tough ships, and the models are neat too!

Yes, Demiurg are cool.

The High Admirality (BFG rules committee) are releasing a new set of rules for the FW Tau ships.

I hope they will be changed before release as they are overpowered.

From what I've seen, BFG is either fun or lame.

Some ships are Metal some are Plastic.

It's not what it seems, needs some updating.

It's your money in the end.

It's experience input not actual game input. He could've gone to a GW website for that.

Prices can be found on forge world, GW, ebay, amazon, etc.

Information on the fleets can be found on GW under the BFG section. (Stats, Info, Fluff)

Like I care what you say or think... No I don't, good day to you sir.

What I'm saying is the Statement " BFG is either fun or lame" is kinda pointless.

The sink.

If your not playing chaos or imperial, be prepared to be limited to a handful of ships for your chosen race.

I'm totally cool with that.

I may go Imperial (or just start two fleets, Tau and Imperial) because the Imperial ships look cool as hell, and when it comes to naming my ships, the ones I'd be most excited about naming would be Tau and Imperial.

Is that weird?

The good thing about BFG is unlike 40K you don't need dozens and dozens (sometimes hundreds) of models. Even just 1 dozen is a full fleet.

That's part of the reason I'm starting both Necromunda and BFG. I can buy a total of ten models for each and have a full gang or fleet, respectively.

yep, if you like two different fleets go ahead and get 'em both still less models than a standard 40K army.

The only objections I have to BFG is the Necron Fleet being unstoppable and the fact that escorts just don't really fill an escort roll and usually be left out of a fleet. The lack of support is kind of annoying, but the fact you can magnetize a half a dozen cruisers and have most ship options covered is nice.

I think I will!

As soon as I have cash monies to spend. I'm about to go and spend $400 on my Orks this weekend, so it may be some time.

Imperial and Tau it is.

Well I don't know. BFG Necrons are kinda like the 40K ones. hey seem unstoppable at first but their limited numbers can really hamper them (can't remember do they phase out too?)

They do phase out, but tomb ships are nearly impossible to destroy due to 2+ brace for impact. The last time I really played, which was a quite while ago, we ran combined Chaos and Imperials vs Necrons (apx 4000 points to 2000 points). The necrons wiped the floor with the combined fleet -- I think the only thing we managed to destroy was a scythe. The combined firepower of both fleets couldn't even cripple a tombship in one round of shooting, let alone destroy it.

ya, realistic fluff-wise but a pain in the but to play against.
