I'm looking ahead at a second army - and meanwhile hoping that my beloved Eldar get a minor update to 5th - and I decided I can't afford a second army unless I really go super - elite style.
I'm aiming at something with very few models, versatility, and fairly effective - even if it isn't quite GT competitive - probably in the 1850 pt range.

I'm also leaning away from a multiple-vehicle mech list where I have to buy 12 Chimeras at 40ish a pop. I am considering the following and would love some input:

- Death Company Jump Pack army (Lemartes, Astorath, perhaps Tycho as well) w/ a Dread or two
- Space Puppies TWC w/3-4 TW mounted heroes w/perhaps Vindicator backup as fire magnets
- Golden Nipple Army
- Dual Raider Loganwing
- Dual Raider BA Assault Termies w/Priests and Chaplains.

Any suggestions? low model count, low vehicle, elite style list.

I have both WolfWing (Loganwing) and Deathwing armies. At 1500 points they feild about 20-25 models depending on vehicle selection. The Wolfwing is far more Elite (flexible) than the deathwing, seeing as how they have combi melta's on terminators and better weapons options.

I definitely like the options on a Loganwing list. They can have anything you want pretty much, but they are a lot more expensive pointwise than normal Termies if you arm them with anything past the PW/SB they come with. I will look through the codex and see what I can make at 1500-1850.

One of the things I like about my Wolfwing army is every model in the squad is an individual so lets say a marine squad gets 6 wounds on my 5 man squad 2 of them being plasma AP2, I can stack both plasma wounds on the guy I am going to need least in the next round. You can get pretty good mileage out of wound allocation. A typical squad in my wolf wing might be a cm/fw cm/wc hf/cf wc/ss wc/ss/meltabomb. I would give the two plasma wounds to the wc/ss model and everyone else would get one wound on a 2+ save. I also liked that they deployed via drop pod and not teleport. Allows me to drop dreads with them as well on the first turn. My entire spacewolf army is consists of 19 WG Terms in various configs, Logan, Najal, Arjak 2 dreads, 5dp and an LR with all three spons magnetized. Its very easy to make a 2k list with just those few models.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One other low model count army I can do but I don't run because I use my nob squad and nob bikers for our apocalypse games. 2 Warbosses 18 nobs, 2 painboyz and a battlewagon is easily 1500. You put half of them on bikes, the other have hit the wagon. Every one is individual wound allocation cheese fest but really fun.

guard! Wait...

Seriously, I wouldnt' put too much on armies that need to rely on land raiders. Raiders are transports, and are expensive transports at that. More points spent on dudes are probably going to be better.

I'd recommend terminator armies or anything else you can get with a good invul save.

Does anyone happen to know if the contents of Space Hulk will make a decent Logan/Deathwing? I don't play marines at all, but this is one way I could conceive of collecting some.

Would the models make legal squads?

With the customization potential of Wolfguard, I'd say yeah, they probably would.

What?!

Land Raiders are gun boats; that just happen to transport troops as a bonus.

Most people play them as just transports, but that is why many people pan them as over-costed.

Sure if you are using it as a Metal Box to move your unit from one side of the field to the other, they are basically really expensive crap that ensures the troops get to their destination alive.

But if you use it a a Plodding implacable gun platform then you get to move 6" every turn firing most or all of your weapons and then in late game disgorge your(still undamaged) Troops unit on an objective; you see it becomes well worth the points, basically killing or wasting the shots of many times its points.

As a Marine if you want a transport take a Rhino or a drop pod, if you want an IFV take a razorback, and if you want a rolling gun-fortress take a Land raider(or Crusader)

The Only land raider that really is just a transport is the redeemer; but that is due to it's weapon choices: 9.5" templates mean you need to zoom along to get close enough to slow down and fire.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

I have thought of that, and no, I don't have to use marines. I just thought they'd fit the bill for cheap, low model count. If I did Ork stompy-kan list I would probably enjoy it but my friend is leaning that direction with his Orks so I don't want to play stompy vs stompy in friendly games. I love the idea of kanwalls though.

Anyone have any luck with a crap ton of jump pack death company with a few thunder hammers, infernus pistols, power weapons, and some heroes?

Otherwise, I am not averse to other things like Eldar Jetseer councils as LMC armies, but I play Eldar already and would rather not. Dark Eldar deathstars don't really work because they are too fragile and lower the model count means their wimpy transport takes the brunt of the enemy's fire. Tau... yea... not so much. I have also thought of daemon hunters deathstar attached to another army for some flavor, but I have a nagging suspicion that list is going to get changed drastically (and probably not be able to ally anymore) so I'm a bit scared to get into that. Guard LMC is .. tanks. I don't want to buy tons of tanks for 40-60 bucks each as I said. I think Chaos is dated and will get redone soon(in GW terms... so like a year) so hopefully that's an option eventually.

Oooh that 'un might be worth considering, Samus...

Always wanted to do CSM as a modelling exercise more than anything, a 500-750pt plague marine list would be interesting...

Yeah, it can be a blast. You really only need less than 40 models, I guess.

40 models that you could paint just by getting your little sister to glue them together for you (smudging it all over them for good measure), dipping them in a green paint pot, applying a hair dryer and then perhaps dunking them in Army Painter ;P

Papa Nurgle'd love it!

Land Raiders are not as good as people think they are.

I would know, I blow them up regularly.

They're no monolith to be sure.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Yea, you can do kombi-skorcha, kombi-rokkit, regular meganob to get 3 wound groups.

That is a lot of metal! =)

No objective takers, I run this exact config with 90 boyz behind them in a 1500 point army. It works well, but at that point I wouldn't call it low model count

1850

This is the kind of hilarity I've been thinking of. 32 models, no vehicles. Would only cost anywhere from 120-200 dollars if I did it right with maybe 'counts as' heroes that I convert using extra bits.
