Hi all
I couldnt find a thread using the search on cases and transporting and storing models but im sure there is somewhere.

what do you use?
is it effective and practical?
whats the cost?

To put it in persepective ill start the ball rolling.
I started with GW cases but found them to impractical for larger armies and vehicles.
I tried specialized cases with valkyrie foam bur also found them expensive for large armies.
I personally think its my main area of disapontment with GW and think its an area they could make so much more money in if they had better and more practical options.

My cases are cosmetic cases that are stackable and i have made foam for larger pieces using foam sheets bought from an upholsterers.
i have 2 of these cases (See pics) and another similar one that has fold out trays in the top section for my paints and bits.
the cases cost £60 so the same as 1 large GW case and the foam i bought for few pounds.

Tupperware or any really hard plastic kitchen storage box and stacks and stacks of bubble-wrap seem to do it for me. I have had no damage from it whether transporting them myself or sending by mail

Automatically Appended Next Post:
that's probably one pound to a fiver for the boxes - depending what size you want, and another pound for a roll of bubble-wrap (I get it free as i work in a shop) try and get the boxes with the snap-lock lids as these will not come open unexpectedly

Well...I only have a cadian battleforce and a tank to transport so I am thinking of getting magnets and then buying a tackle box. My friend has it and it looks really effective. He even transports his tanks like that too (excpt with a bigger box).

I use the GW cases for my mini's(although I will need to get an other one soon, not enough space for my second army), and a talkle box for my paints and tools(although this is running out of space as well)

i used the same kieser cases for my IG before i found the ones i use now. the Kiser are good especially for trandporting a few hundred points of a larger army.
the only thing i found was the cardboard cases wore after too much in and out of cupboards for me or under the stairs and the metal cases are really expensive, bur at least they are well designed foams.

My Necrons inhabit a pair of GW cases, complete with Troop Transport Backpack. One of the cases has two sheets of the foam cut up to make the spaces bigger, then put open side to open side to hold all my Destroyers.

Space Marines troops are in a GW case, and all the vehicles are in a pair of power tool cases with deep pick and pluck foam from Menards.

Chaos Daemons are in one of the larger GW cases, all the troops in the foam sheets, and big beasties in the other half with the vehicle foam.

`Nids are relegated to a pair of large card boxes due to their freakish sizes and shapes and pointy bits sticking out all over the place. Those boxes are then inside a cheapo gatorade duffel bag I got for free from my old job.

My Lizardmen are also currently inhabiting a card box as I have not yet purchased a case for them.

My Warmachine stuff is in one of Battlefoam's Warmachine bags.

I use metal trays with magnetized bases. Usually the models are in GW cases long term, but I like being able to see the list organized in front of me when I deploy. Trays are quick & easy for tournaments also. My FLGS runs 3 games/ 1 hour each tournaments every 2 weeks & it helps to be organized so that you don't hear the dreaded, "DICE DOWN."

I use an old Plano tackle box with three drawers. The top fits a Land Raider, Predator, Razorback, 2 dreadnoughts, and gaming supplies. One drawer is half full of tactical marines, the other full of terminators. All the drawers are removable, and latch-topped, with A/C filter foam padding the imteriors... Ghetto, I know, but effective. That holds a 2,500 point army with room to spare...

Thanks. I saw tutorial on video again very nice job

To reply to the topic in Europe I find Kaiser to be the best option for transporting and for storing, since each card module is independent and can be stored anywere.

Storage: In my hobby room, I have Ikea shelving with pull out drawers. We used their BestA series and customized my wall. I have sections for painting supplies, Hirst Art Molds and castings, foam terrain, completed minis, works-in-progress, and my TV/DVD/Nintendo.

It looks a little like this, but not exactly.

I'm ghetto. I have a case that I use for my vehicles, kindly donated by my big brother, but to keep my infantry figures safe and un-scratched I use egg-cartons. They are perfectly safe if you carry them like you would carry.. well.. a dozen eggs. They cost $0.83 at the grocery store and even come with breakfast!

Com Suntzu,

If you are asking the original poster (Fox40), those are cosmetic cases. Do a google search for Stackable Cosmetic Cases and you'll find a fair number. Some with wheels and a handle.

@Fox40:
Maybe you can post a link to the exact ones you got for those that are interested. I think you did a good job with those.

I got my cases from ebay. do a search for beauty case or beauty trolley, things like that work as well as vanity case.
they are really good i have 2 of the black cases and due to army size the case you see in the pics has an extra layer from the other case and so the other case is shorter. the guys at my local game shop like them when i play a game i use as many layers as needed to tranport just the bits i need so 1000pts might be 2 layers 1750 3 or 4 layers, i rarely need to take the big bottom layer as it holds alot of men.
hope that helps

I use a rifle case to transport my 3 armies, granted its just the tau battlforce+2 crisis, and the AoBR box rines, but its pretty miffable and i bet i coudl fit 2k of each in it

egg cartons also double as accoustic sound damping materiel, breakfast, and really cheap figure cases (just not all at once... gotta have breakfast first). I strongly recommend them if you aren't embarrassed to show up at an event with 5 dozen eggs under your arm... In which case, you need to not take yourself so seriously

I don't use this myself (too pricy for my simple tastes) but one of the local Ork players uses this method for carrying his army. Good, sturdy box with sheet metal on the bottom, and every model has a magnetized base. It's not as expensive as it seems for magnetizing bases - my store sells these interesting little magnetic strips that are about the size and shape of standard infantry bases, just peel off and stick.

Personally, I go cheap with some product from my local craft store. A big plastic case for carrying tanks, and a compartmentalized thread case for storing infantry models. I don't even have proper padding for my tanks, I've taken to just putting them in three layers with some newspaper between them.

Originally, I used pluck-foam Sabol Trays in Sabol bags.

Nowadays, I only use the Sabol Trays for cold storage.

I have been easing myself towards BLU Pluck Foam. It costs the same as Sabol and is stronger. It's also cheaper, stronger, better, and more guiltless than anything Battlefoam could ever do.

As for a carrying case, I use a conveniently-sized Office Depot Folding File Cart.
It seems like a fairly standard item that could also be found at Home Depot, Office Max, Lowes, and BedBath&Beyond for prices ranging from $15 to $25.

IKEA has these tubs that I just bought two sets of which stack into each other, but still leave enough room for a drop pod size model. I put sheet metal along the bottom of one.
