Fresh-Faced New User

I'm a newish player to Warhammer 40k - I have a fairly large Ork Army and have just acquired some more models for it today.
I really need some advice on painting and modelling (I have the AOBR boxed set and was wondering if I could convert the SM Dread into an Ork Looted Dread) I also need advice on how to win battles as I have played against Imperial Guard and Tau and lost badly to them.
Hope anyone can help me.
