My Space Marine Captain has a Iron Halo which confers a 4+ invulnerable save. I gave him a command squad, but was not sure if the Iron Halo was spread or not. Normally I wouldn't give the squad a save but he Iron Halo is a field, as described in codex, so it could possibly spread.

Sadly no. The Iron Halo is a personal energy field so the Captain can't spread it.

Ah well, thanks all the same. I can still use it when he is taking a wound for the group, right?

The rules do not say it spreads, so it doesn't.

It can only be used when he takes wounds, no-one else.

Most of the imperial invulnerable save items are some kind of personal force-field fluffwise, so they will say 'field' somewhere in the description or name, but it doesn't confer any rules effect.

Except that the fluff has exactly zero bearing on the rules.

If it doesn't say the effect is shared with the unit to which he is attached, it isn't.

Yes. He can use it when rolling saves for wounds allocated to him, as a lone character or part of a group. That's kind of the point of "complex units" on page 25 of the BRB.

you could give them storm shields for 15 pts... you know, thats not just like... a 3+ save?
