Hello there!

I'm working on converting my Sternguard Marines (using the commander set and a tactical squad box) and I realized I have a Veteran Captain Space Marine model lying around here - a 1991 model. You can see it here, at the bottom of the page:

http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2006smcommanders.jpg

I thought it could be a fun addition to the squad. Problem is, miniatures today are rather different from the old ones in proportions - new minis are more "robust". I'm worried the model would look too odd between the others. So... Anyone has experience with mixing RT-era and modern day marines? Are there any possible ways to make the model look less obscure between the others? And is it a good idea to mix the units?

Discussion is most welcome

RT minis are smaller. They really don't mix all that well. However, I've got a decent split between RT/2nd ed and modern minis in my Crimson Fists. I don't mix Marines between squads though.

So that's 1 opinion for and 1 against so far

Brother SRM - But couldn't, for example, high basing help to make the model look larger and more in harmony with the newer ones?

I have lots of Rogue Trader era minis in my marine army, and although when compared up close side by side they're noticeably different, in a squad and on the tabletop the differences are negligible.

Yeah, but the model's proportions and designs are still out of whack. Whatever though, they're your models! I have no qualms about fielding them in an army together, so you shouldn't have any problem fielding them in a squad together. It just makes a nice way to distinguish one squad from another when you have a different squad of Marines for each edition of the game!

I would consider that to be more of a 2nd edition era model. I have all those Captains apart from the Space Wolf and the Vet. And they mix perfectly with modern marines. The real RT style models tend to be from before 1990 and they are all squatting, and small and badly sculpted (charming though they are).

Marines from after 1990 will usually blend quite well with modern troops provided they are painted in the same manner. I believe the current Ragnar model is from 1992, and still going strong.

The only thing you might want to consider is giving him one of the newer back packs. Otherwise I don't see any problem.

A painless alternative would be to add ammonia to bleach in a confined space listening to sad songs and reading a C.S. Goto novel.

Thanks for the opinions

I have been thinking about switching the backpack, the new ones are indeed proportionally larger though. However those old metal backpacks/cloaks are terribly annoying

I love RT models. Leman Russ - Primarch and armed with a chain sword and power armor. Bolt Pistol costs extra.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Do it! It's a Jes Goodwin sculpt so stylistically it fits in with the newer stuff. Avoid a modern backpack though, they're too big and will make him look back-heavy.

And, as has already been suggested, just stand the guy on a piece of slate or bark and people won't notice the slight scale difference.

It'll be fine. I still use my old beakie techmarines with the monkey wrench and the tool box :-)

^This.

@brother SRM: GWs scale is all over the shop inconsistent anyway. In a skirmish game on a 2'x2' table, it might stand out like dog testicles. On a 6'x4' tabletop it won't make a difference.

I have him and freki and geri to go with, he's not particularly impressive really, only cost me £10 for the lot.
