I've been lurking for awhile, but have actually joined up to ask some advice. I just started playing again recently after a 15 year hiatus. I've built a pretty solid 1k-1500 point mech vet army (it hasn't lost yet, but I've only played 8 games mostly against people who have never seen so many tanks on the board at once.) I'm trying to figure out how to jump to a 2k list.

Here's what I'm thinking:

HQ 227
Commander bolt pistol
plasma x4
chimera w/H Bolter/MLs
Astropath
OoF

Vet Squad A 172
sergeant bolt pistol
plasma x3
chimera w/H flamer/Mlas

Vet Squad B 172
sergeant bolt pistol
plasma x3
chimera w/H flamer/Mlas

Veteran C 157
Sergeant Bolt pistol
Melta x3
Chimera 55

Vet Squad D 157
bolt pistol
melta x3
chimera w/H flamer/Mlas

Veteran E 130
Shotguns
melta x3
Demo

Valk MRPS 130

Vendetta 130

Demolisherx2 w/HF 330

Hydra x2 150

Total is 1755

The squad not in a Chimera rides the valk.

I'm trying to figure out what to use the last 245 points for. The only thing I don't own in this list are the Hydra, but they seem like a really option to stop those pesky Eldar skimmers, or land speeders.

Other things I currently have finished are LRBT, Hellhound x2(or variant), basilisk, autocannon teams x2, and assorted other guys to make another squad with 2x flame and 1x GL.

I've considered adding the LRBT, but then I'd have to squardron the Demo's which seems like a bad idea. I'm also considering a PBS with x10 psykers. I've had luck with the AC's added into the plasma vets, but really see that as a way to eat up points. I've had very little luck with the hellhounds, but just realized that they're fast vehichles (smack myself upside the head), so maybe they're good for more than target practice.

I also wonder if I need a 6th squad for objectives.

Thoughts?

(and yes I realize i have alot of plasma, but so far my luck has held until turn 5 or so when attrition catches up.)

Drop MoO and maybe astropath. Swap one plasma for a Medic and give the CC a plasma pistol. I would recommend another vet squad with the other points. Can never have too many

There's no MoO. I tried him once, and missed every shot. I have an Officer of the Fleet to screw with reserves. I've run into a few players that like to reserve and outflank everything. OoF suprised them.

I'm not sure Astropath is worth it. My only outflank is unit is the Valk, and I haven't used many other reserves in my games.

I have considered a medic. My last game I rolled 3 ones when rapid firing... I saved one, but did finish off the marine squad that popped their transport.

Plasma pistol is definitely a good suggestion. I had also considered a PF if I took the medic.

I guess my biggest problem is that most of my choices will take up around 150 points +/- (vet squad, LRBT, 2nd Vendetta, hell hound etc...) that leaves me with around 100 points, which is an awkward number for a guard list. EQ upgrades are a waste on guard in general, I don't find sentinels useful. I have no platoons to take special weapons squads. What do I use the remaining 100 or so points for?

Argh once again I cant read lists

must be like 5th time already

for that 100 points, you could add in another hydra or something

The MoO does seem like a great thing on paper. He just never works out.

Yeah, I thought of the Hydra. It just seems that 2 Hydra's in a squadron will do the same job as 3 for the most part.

Well 3 Hydras will undoubtedly do better against a horde of a MC

On rethinking I'm considering dropping a plasma squad. Instead I'd take a platoon with the following:

PCS
Bolt Pistol
Autocannon
Plasma x2
72

Infantry A
Flamer x3
Chimera 55
120

Infantry B
Grenade x3
Chimera 55
120

Special Weapons
plasma x3
80

I'd also upgrade the CCs to a medic, and a plasma pistol. The rest of the list remains the same. Grand total is 1998

The PCS and Special Weapons would ride in Vendetta for late game objectives. This gives me 8 scoring units. The only causes for concern that I see are the sheer number of units for calculating victory points, and the lack of long range support. All I have in that department are 2 Hydra's and a Vendetta. Thoughts?

The only real eyesore from your original list was the MoO.

Also, hydras aren't ALL that great vs. eldar skimmers (that aren't also vypers). They get to ignore SMF cover, but they're still only S7 vs. AV12. Now, if you're fighting DARK eldar on the other hand...

Anyways, I wouldn't spend the points on anything new, but rather to bump up something else you already have. Another hydra and another demolisher, for example, or another thing of mechvets.
