So, my friend is starting 40k, and has chosen Imperial Guard. So far he has gotten the battle force and a few other models, but is looking to up his force to around 1500 points.

The thing is, he likes the idea of having hordes of guard charging across the battlefield, so he wants to run Foot Guard. He likes the idea of blob squads, and doesn't want to sit back and shoot. He also wants to get at least one leman russ.

So, with those two ideas (Blobs + a Leman Russ) in mind, I wrote up this list, though having never played guard, my knowledge of them is somewhat limited.

So, here goes. 1500 Points.

HQ:

CCS -- 255
3x Plasma
Standard
Creed (Not sure about him. He looks like he'd be helpful, but I don't really know. 255 Points seems like a lot for a 5 man squad...)
Chimera (He only has one chimera, and would like to use it in his army, but im not not sure having just 1 in the army is worth while. I guess it would sort of keep Creed safe...)

Ministorum Priest x2 -- 120
w/ Eviscorator

Troops:

Platoon #1:

PCS: -- 80
4x Flamers

Infantry Squad --115
Grenade Launcher
Power Weapon
Melta Bombs
Commisar w/ PW

Infantry Squad -- 65
GL
PW

Heavy Weapons Team -- 75
3 Autocannons

Special Weapons Team -- 65
3 Meltas

2nd Platoon: Same as the first.

Heavy Support:

Manicore -- 160

Demolisher -- 165

Total: 1500

So, i guess 1 Blob would scout forward and the other blob would move forward with the PCSs and special weapons teams while the HWTs and Manticore sat in the back and shot and Creed drove around giving orders. It seems like the blobs would do an alright job of tying up CC units, while the Demolisher and Special Weapons teams shot stuff.

So, things I'm wondering:

Is one Chimera going to be so useless i might as well leave it out?

Would i be better off with more bodies instead of the Priests?

If you had to run a Leman Russ, is the demolisher a good choice?

And finally, how well would this list work? It doesn't have to win tournaments or anything, but I'd rather it not get stomped every time. I just want something that will give my friend a playable, winnable army that will give him the general idea how foot IG work, and he can experiment with his own variations from there.

Tell your friend I admire his courage for running assault guard. It is doable but difficult. I recommend Straken.

Hmm, yeah Straken does seem better then Creed. I just realized that fearless from "for the honor of Cadia" would be bad for blobs because of fearless wounds, and make the Commissars pointless...

So...forget Creed, take off a melta bombs, and put in Straken. What do you guys think now?

He'll get tired of moving all those models each turn. It's not fun moving 100+ and will just end up going mech guard which is IG's strength anyways

Man I think I would totally take a bunch of priests if they were attached much like the commissars!

Still if you get the charge, they did their duty. Plus they can get shotguns!
