I don;t think Thunderhawks are grouped in standing squadrons. Remember that Thunderhawks aren't a fighters or bombers. They're gunships, used in the deployment and support of ground assets. Yes, they are sometimes used in an air to air or space to space capacity, but it would be vastly outmatched in a dogfight in any of the various dedicated fighter/interceptor craft. Using them The only thing I've ever seen regarding Thunderhawk squadrons is in BFG, and I think it's only called such to simplify rules. They are Thunderhawks grouped together for a space mission, most likely, and are for rules purposes, analogous to other naval squadrons. So yes. The question is, how many are on a Space Marine vessel? Let's assume that we're dealing with the needs of a single Battle Company on a deployment, and that a battle company would need a vessel no larger than a Space Marine Strike Cruiser. Consider, that, according to the rules, a Thunderhawk has a transport capacity of 30 passengers. A Battle Company has, at full strength, 60 Tactical Marines, 20 Devastator Marines, 20 Assault Marines, and perhaps a 5-10 man command element. In addition, a company might have a Dreadnought or two. So, for roughly 110 marines, and 1 Dreadnought (since a Thunderhawk can only carry one, counting as 10 pasengers) that's 3 and a two thirds Thunderhawks. Now, it's common for a Battle Comapny to be joined by assets from the 1st, 10th, and Reserve Companies. We won't count scout squads from the 10th. They'd have been deployed before hand, anyway. Well assume no more then 4 squads from 1st and reserve companies, so we're at 4 Thunderhawks now, not including Thunderhawk Transporters, which are under armed and of no use in boarding actions, or as gunships. So 4. I'd say that's what a standard Battle Company plus support would need.
