Grim Rune Priest in the Eye of the Storm
|
After reading, posting on many threads and remembering some of out old BattleTech games, I have come up with a challenge for everyone out there.
Pick 1-3 Character(s) out of your favorite Codex [Mine will Be Space Wolves] that you see no use for or think they just Suck.
Make a 1500 point List with them in it and play that list at lest 1-3 times before the end of the year in Pick Up Games or in games where you and your opponent both do the same thing. Then tell us how it went.
I will go first, The Two out of the Space Wolf Codex I think are worthless are actually Ulric [and I used to love him] and Lukas.
1500 Pts - Space Wolves Roster: Ulric/Lukas List
Ulrik the Slayer @ 180 pts
Blood Claws Pack @ 265 pts (Bolt Pistol x12; Close Combat Weapon x14; Flamer x1; Plasma Pistol x1)
-1x Blood Claw w/ Power Fist (Power Fist; Flamer)
Wolf Priest @ 145 pts (Power Armor; Wolf Amulet; Wolftooth Necklace; Bolt Pistol x1; Crozius Arcanum x1; Saga of the Wolfkin)
Blood Claws Pack @ 395 pts (Bolt Pistol x11; Close Combat Weapon x13; Flamer x2; Plasma Pistol x1; Power Weapon)
-Lukas the Trickster
Long Fangs Pack @ 155 pts (Close Combat Weapon x5; Missile Launcher x5)
-1x Squad Leader (Bolt Pistol x1; Power Weapon x1)
5 Long Fangs Pack @ 180 pts (Close Combat Weapon x5; Heavy Bolter x1; Lascannon x2; Missile Launcher x2)
-1x Squad Leader (Bolt Pistol x1; Power Weapon x1)
Lone Wolf @ 90 pts (Power Armor; Mark of the Wulfen; Melta Bombs; Close Combat Weapon x1; Storm Shield x1)
-2x Fenrisian Wolf
Lone Wolf @ 90 pts (Power Armor; Mark of the Wulfen; Melta Bombs; Close Combat Weapon x1; Storm Shield x1)

Interesting idea. For me, sadly, it's Baharroth - fantastic model, but not great for what you pay. I'm in a tournament right now, but when I finish I'll give this a go and get back to you =)

Unfortunately, the three most useless characters in most cases will be HQ choices, in which case you cannot take three (with a couple of exceptions).
Can we use useless units for this instead? Or make other choices in order to keep the list legal?
If so, I'd totally make a list with Space Pope, Shadowsun, and a Gun Drone squad.
Even though technically the three most useless characters in the Tau codex would be Space Pope, Ethereals, and Shadowsun, in that order - and you can't make a legal list with two Ethereals (1+ Fire Caste Commander requirement). So the next best thing is Space Pope, Shadowsun, and Gun Drones.

You could use Planetstrike.

Thank you, it's just some .gif of a phoenix I found on google ages ago lol.
If we're doing units as well as characters, I'd better give him a Swooping Hawk bodyguard. Or go the whole way and take Baharroth and Asurmen as both of my HQ slots =D

Hmmm... Character wise for CSM: Lucius, Fabius, and a Sorcerer would be my picks.
But for units: Lucius, Sorcerer and Spawn would be my picks.
Might have to do this later, don't think I have much time before the end of this year though (Going to have a tourney going on soon.)

Your using Uric wrong if you think he is worthless, the following is something I wrote on a different forum.
Just because I'm having fun with this, lets talk about Uric the Slayer. I've heard pretty negative things about him, but is he really that bad? Is he just not worth the extra 80 points over a Wolf Priest?
Uric has a few things over and above a basic Wolf Priest.
+1 WS
+1 BS
+1 Int
+1 Attack
Wolf Tooth Necklace
Plasma Pistol
Best comparable accounting comes to about 80 points in stat/equipment upgrades. So that now leaves us with 0 points to account for, and as such all of the stuff below are just benefits.
Now we look at his intangibles, stuff that doesn't have a correlating point cost.
+1 WS to other model. This isn't huge, but don't scoff either, it really depends on who your giving the bonus too. Giving +1 WS to say a TWC with thunderhammer means hes now WS5 and hitting most things on a 3. That can add up over 4/5 attacks per assault phase.
Slayers Oath - This takes the place of Oath of War. Its better but a little more limiting. Slayer oath has a better effect than Oath of war in that you get to reroll damage rolls as well as to hit rolls, but its much more limiting in that its only against units that are T5 or better. But its not too bad because T5+ models can show up in any FOC slot or any unit type. Its just not as universally useful as oath of war. This ability seems to be particularly damaging when combined with a grey hunter squad or wolf guard squad that employs multiple power fists. That's a lot of re-rolls against things that really don't like those weapons. Also don't forget that T5 comes in lots of different places. Plague marines, marine (all flavors) bikers, TWC, Ork Warboss, Wraithlords, Immortals, C-Tan, Mephiston, etc. There will be something for you to smack around in the opposing army.
Wolf Helm of Russ - The first bit about forcing an enemy character to have to make a LD check to attack him is a bit underwhelming as most of those characters are going to be LD 9 or 10 anyway. This really isn't going to save Urics hide. However the secondary ability of this piece of wargear is huge. Re-rolled Moral checks for the entire army. Its like Saga of majesty (15 point value) but with unlimited range, you just need LOS. Also it effects all units including those that can't get LD upgrades like TWC and Frensian wolves. That is a powerful force multiplier when you consider that you could leave most wolf guard at home and get to help other units that just can't get above LD 7 or 8 on their own.
Urics only downside is that he can't get any fast movement wargear like a jump pack or bike that a normal Wolf Priest enjoys. So that pretty much means he is foot slogging it or borrows a ride.
I see him having real potential if you can capitalize on his intangibles. I can see him being a wonderful fit on a TWC heavy list where his moral reroll and mentor ability can shine. Stick him with a unit of grey hunters or slightly tricked out Wolf guard with a few p-fists thrown in and he can be quite the devastating kill most anything unit. I don't really see a need for him to lead a BC unit (the job of most Wolf Priests) because that puts him in a Land Raider where I'm not sure if the moral bonus would still apply (I don't have a ruling off the top of my head if those sort of special abilities work while in vehicles with no firing ports).
So in conclusion, I don't really get the idea that he is overcosted or even worthless. I think that if you build your list around his bonuses he can actually be quite useful. So like most things in the SW codex. He isn't a must have, but he isn't going to hurt your chances at winning either, and in the right build his bonuses really make up for his increased point cost.

It not that he is bad. but it might also be the local Meta. Unless I am fighting Nids his Slayers Oath does not come up very often. Its not that I think he sucks, I just feel I can can take a Normal Wolf Priest and be more Flexible.
That is why I included Myself in and him in the Challenge. I have not been using him because of my statement above about the Lack of Flexibility. I want to like him, so to find out if I do I want to give he a try, The Challenge is going to force me to.

I'm not really a fan of the list you posted. Footslogging is all good but you need some protection or use models that are their own protection. I'd try to find a way to throw a Rune Priest in there with Stormcaller to give your guys a little bit of help as they walk around.
I came up with this list 1504 points.
Uric the Slayer
Wolfguard x3, combi melta x1, power fist x2
Grey Hunters x10, MOTW, P-fist, Wolf Standard, Melta gun x2
BloodClaws x9, Lukas the trickster upgrade, flamer
Thunderwolf Cav x3, power fist, bolter
Long fangs x4, missile launchers x3
landraider Redeemer
Landraider redeemer
Hehe.. twin LR list with thunderwolfs in 1500 points. Melta gun WG goes with grey hunters, p-fist only WG goes with bloodclaws, and stock WG goes with long fangs giving an additional ablative wound.
When Urics unit gets out they get to shoot something up with three melta shots and one plasma shot. That will do a number on any high T unit, then just charge in and finish it off with the 5 p-fist attacks that get to re-roll both hits and wounds. I used redeemers to help give anti horde ability with the flamers. They don't have the melta gun, but the assault cannon is nothing to laugh at. Move 12 shoot assault cannon with POTMS. Move 12 disembark, flame something, charge something and then next turn move 6 and keep killing stuff as needed.
Lukas unit is anti-horde or small unit bust up. They flame something then charge in with tons of attacks and Lukas Wolfclaw will help there as well. The P-fist on the WG is incase you run into a walker or something like that.

Well I took out Ulric and Lukas against 1,500 points of Nids I can not give an opinion yet. As usual, nothing went right. Ulric ended up on the side with all of the Genestealers so his Slayer’s oath was completely worthless. Lukas with the Wolf Priest running Oath of War: Infantry only arrange to get into close combat once vs. Termagants ALL 9 of them, and he could only reach 3 of them so I wasted attacks wile the rest of the Blood Claws finished them off. The only good thing was the Long Fangs wiped out his warriors in a single volley of missile fire. So we are going to try once more later.

Well I took Ulric and Lukas out. This time we did 2,000 points and I included Canis.
Here is my list:
2000 October Ulric/Lucas
Ulrik the Slayer @ 180 pts
Wolf Guard Pack @ 365 pts
-3x Wolf Guard in Power Armor (Storm Bolter x1; Thunder Hammer x1)
-1x Wolf Guard in Power Armor (Storm Shield x1; Thunder Hammer x1) {Recipient of Ulric’s Mentor Ability}
-1x Wolf Guard in Power Armor (Wolf Claw x2)
-1x Marked Wolf Guard in Power Armor (Close Combat Weapon; Storm Bolter x1) {With the Grey Hunters}
-1x Razorback (Twin Linked Lascannon)
Wolf Priest @ 125 pts (Power Armor; Wolf Amulet; Wolf Tail Talisman; Wolftooth Necklace; Bolt Pistol x1; Crozius Arcanum x1; Saga of the Beastslayer)
Blood Claws Pack @ 395 pts (Bolt Pistol x11; Close Combat Weapon x13; Flamer x2; Plasma Pistol x1; Power Weapon x1)
-1x Lukas the Trickster
Grey Hunters Pack @ 225 pts (Mark of the Wulfen; Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x7; Bolter x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Plasmagun x2; Plasma Pistol x1; Power Fist x1)
1st Long Fangs Pack @ 155 pts (Close Combat Weapon x5; Missile Launcher x5)
-1x Squad Leader (Bolt Pistol; Power Weapon x1)
2nd Long Fangs Pack @ 180 pts (Close Combat Weapon x5; Heavy Bolter x1; Lascannon x2; Missile Launcher x2)
-1x Squad Leader (Bolt Pistol; Power Weapon x1)
Canis Wolfborn @ 205 pts
-2x Fenrisian Wolf
Iron Priest @ 170 pts (Thunderwolf Mount; Wolf Tail Talisman; Wolftooth Necklace; Bolt Pistol; Thunder Hammer)
-4x Cyberwolf (Unit Type: Beasts; Vicious claws and fangs; Counter-attack)
Total Roster Cost: 2000
Well, once more mixed results.
-Ulric: Made his points back, but only in a Synergy Mode. I never hit once with him, though I was involved in 3 Close Combats. They were with a Genestealer Brood that I got to use my Slayers Oath with the Brood Lord, a Tervagaunt and finally Warriors.
Luka: Meh… he killed a bunch of Termagants and Genestealers, but nowhere near his 170 points he is worth.
Canis: Well I teamed him up with the Iron Priest and got into a fight with a Tyranid Prime and 27 un-savable wounds and the everything in that fight was dead.
What won the fight, Once more was the Long Fangs and the Grey Hunters, whom never moved the whole fight, they just stood behind their cover and blasted everything to Crap.
I am more impressed with Ulric, but Lukas is still…Meh.
