I got IA8 when it came out and have been itching to try out the Dread Mob army list from it, as the thought of a stompy mob of death appeals to my Orkish sensibilities.
My goals: to include all the killa kans and Deff Dreads I own, include a mega-dread and Kustom Meka-Dread (both currently in the works) and to have some big MEk and gretchin elements to keep to theme.
Based upon my collection and the fact that i plan to play a friendly 1500pt. COD campaign game soon here is my list:
DREAD MOB [1500]
FAST ATTACK:
* (3) killa kans w/ r. launchas: 150
* (3) killa kans w/ r. launchas: 150
* (3) killa kans w/ b. shootas: 120
TROOPS:
* D. Dread w/ DCCWx4, armour plates, grot riggers: 120
* D. Dread w/ DCCWx4, armour plates, grot riggers: 120
* D. Dread w/ DCCWx4, armour plates, grot riggers: 120
* Gretchin scavenger mob (15 grots + runtherd): 70
* spanna boyz mob (20 boyz w/ shootas): 120
HEAVY SUPPORT:
* Mega-Dread w/ added b. shoota, swap-out for Skorcha, grot riggers: 185
HQ:
* Kustom Meka-Dread w/ KFF, Big-Zzappa: 270
* Big Mek w/ burna, bosspole, 2 grot oilers: 70
Big Mek will join spanna boyz mob.
Gretchin will be used to sit on/grab closest objective to deployment.
Deff Dreads, MEga-Dread and Kustom-Meka Dred to be used to assault enemy/grab objectives under cover of KFF as needed while kans provide covering fire/tank hunt as needed.
Keep in mind this is to be used in a friendly campaign game vs. Cadians and/or Utramarines.
I have not seen any Dread Mobs in action, nor played one myself. I'm curious what people's thoughts are on this build? Disaster waiting to happen? Cheesy?

You NEED a unit of Spanner Boys! Not too keen on the kustom meka dread. A lot of points. Rather get a junka and some more kans. Need some grot zookas too. Maybe swap one Arm on each Deff Dread for scorcha

Good call on the spanners I overlooked the "1+" requirement. Will need to recalculate.
As for your other suggestions I am basing this list on models I have,and I have a mega-dread and Kustom Meka in the works as they are fun modeling projects, so I wanna give them a test spin, though my gut also tells me the KMD might indeed be a little too pricey.
Also I don't plan to buy new models nor rip models apart for this as it is a one-off list for a campaign game, though your concerns are noted.

Alrighty then, no worries. It kinda sucks though that the KFF on the Meka Dread, while it helps others around him, does nothing for himself. The Bomb Pack appeals to me more but I guess you need all the extra cover saves you can get

Good call on the uselessness of armour plates and riggers on kans, rereading the rules on vehicles units I see that.
That alone frees up 135pts which can be used to buy the spanna boyz unit.
Concerning the KFF on the Kustom Meka-Dread: why is it useless to the KMD itself? The description states that theMeka-dread itself is protected by it. Thus he would get the 4+ KFF save for being obscured when shot at, and in cc he would instead take his 5+ invul. save from being ramshackle.
So that leaves the KMD's inclusion itself as your biggest remaining point of contention?

Well its like 75 points for something to increase your save in shooting by one. But I guess it could work out.
