Topic says all. I'm the FNG to all of this kind of stuff so forgive me for being a bit clueless. I'm just getting into all this with a couple friends of mine who have stuff. I was wondering what the general consensus was on converting Space Marine stuff to Chaos. Currently I bought a drednought from my friend cheap since he was wanting to get rid of one. It's standard, and fits within the rules of the Chaos codex as far as armament goes. I don't see any reason why if I add some battle damage, and gouge up symbols of the Imperium, then paint it with my current paint scheme why I couldn't use it.

I would definitely accept it if my opponent fielded it in a tournament, but I'm not sure if the TO's would. Some tourneys are more restrictive than others.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this. Chaos marines are traitor marines, and new ones turn to the dark side all the time. As for a dreadnought, just say they killed the marine inside and jacked his ride for one of their buddies

Nothing wrong with it. I bought the assault on black reach set and converted its dreadnought for chaos. As long as the weapons are in the Chaos Codex nothing is wrong with it.

Only advice i can give is make sure they look chaotic ... Maybe add spikes.

End of the day a SM is a SM; doesn't matter which codex you use the same base model will work for them all.

...Or you can make fluffy and surprising traitor force.

Change nothing on space marines deployed standartly. Use chaos models on all other units arriving via deep strike, reserves etc...

I think with little effort you could justify anything about this.

"Greetings battle brother from -insert your favourite traitors here- chapter."

"Uh, hello...die DIE DIE loyalist scum!!!"

You dont need to say they stole the dreadnought, just that the brother was turned to chaos / was inhabited by a daemon.

As long as were not seeing assault cannons or storm shields, this is 100% fine. Its even RAW allowed. Models in power armor with boltguns are marines. They do not require spikes and mutation and angry faces to be chaos

Oh yeah, converting models is fine but...

"By the Golden Throne, that is HERESY!" (jk )

Have fun making traitor legions and be sure to follow what the codex allows those foul chaos warriors to have

You can use Tau as Nids if you wanted to, just make sure to use only a single codex in any one game.

It's called Counts As, and is perfectly fine.

Quite right; my friends and I do this all the time when testing out new armies/units.

That's not exactly the same. That called a "Proxy".

Proxies are temporary stand ins so you can test something new before having to buy it.

Counts As is a fully completed model that looks like one thing but you are using the rules of another in a consistent manner.

Or even better, a sorceror of chaos bound a deamon in the broken hulk of a defeated SM dreadnought as an act of irony, and ofcourse to please his daemon masters.

That's good, I'm imagining ultramarine blue with the horse shoes and things still on it, but a little battle damage, and the openings around the sarcophagus area painted to look scorched and burnt like there's something infernal inside

... i would turn the sarcophagus up-side-down. Like this ... ok i added some green and gore but still nothing but ultramarine here (note this is photo-shoped ^_^ note real)

A dreadnought is a dreadnought.

As long as the weapons are correct and it's a dreadnought model then it works perfectly for either faction.

Spiky bits on shoulders offer no combat bonuses so WYSIWYG does not apply to them at all.

My hat is off to you if you built that. That's pretty impressive. Perhaps a storm raven proxy?

Nah, I wish. Just a google search for HMS Dreadnought.

The sink.

There's nothing wrong with using a loyalist dread as a chaos dread. The chaos dread model is metal, expensive, and ugly.
