Maybe its me, but It seems like many people don't really use greater daemons but use only Heralds. I don't care for the heralds because they seem really weak compared to the greater daemons. Does anyone have any real luck with using heralds, or using a combination of heralds and greater daemons?

I prefer a combination of GDs and Heralds. I often use the Heralds as unit sinks or facilitating something else (slaanesh to help move a unit in range of Tzeentch for fun filled breath of chaos antics). GDs can take a lot of hits and function as both troop or vehicle killers, at least Bloodthirsters.

I like using the GUO and Skulltaker (sort of a Herald). A big bullet magnet and a straight up murderer seem to take care of most situations.

In my opinion the only two competitive heralds are the tzeentch shooty chariot and the Slaaneshi assaulty chariot because both have speed, increased durability and are either really cheap for what they do (Slaaneshi) or provide something that daemons lack like ranged firepower (tzeentch).

Without using greater daemons and only Heralds on chariots aren't armies with a lot of tanks harder too deal with. I don't have much faith in bolt of change.

Depends, Fiends can be a great counter to tanks as can Daemon Princes.

The speedy Slaaneshi Chariot Herald I mentioned above is also a good option, I think they're S5 Rending on the charge with half a bajillion attacks (approximately) which is enough to see anything that isn't a Monolith or Land Raider stopped.

Personally I like the GUO as he seems to be the only one who sticks around for a while.

Lately I have been stealing Centurion99's 4 herald of Khorne on Juggs, w/ unholy might and rending attached to a group of crushers, as they can pure cleave through any unit in the game. Also with all the wound allocation they stick around. Note: The chaos gods do not like this cheesy unit as I have always had this 900 point unit show up as the 2nd wave due to getting my non preferred wave.

Heralds of Tzeentch can blow things up, but if the battlefield is crowded, they can get torn down in melee.

Masque catches people off guard now and again, but good players kill her early.
