I'm new to 40K and building my first army. I've come up with the Chapter name of the "Burning Missiles".

Here a quick mock up of idea for armour color. Critism and Advice welcome:

TOO RED.
Anyway looks good. Apart from the red. I suggest adding a little bit more to the marine as well like. More colors another than yellow. Because thats basically the Fire Lords.

Looks like the 'new' Fire Hawk scheme, from the upcoming IA9...

Still, it will be nice if you can pull it off!

Did you use a program for the template or was it scratch built???

I used the Space Marine Painter on The Bolter & Cahinsword http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smp.php, doing 3 or 4 different copies with different colors. Then I just pasted each copy as a Layer in PS and freehand erased to get the flame effect. It's not perfect, but I'm just doing a mock up.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
2 new versions, green and blue, to even out the red.

I think the green looks ok, but would need to be lighter. The color here is Dark Angels Green.

The skull and wings look lame in light blue. Maybe is they were gold.

My other 2 variations would be:
1. Replacing the green/blue with bright white, like white hot metal
2. Going with the original colors and just reworking the flame pattern to go further into the red areas.

I agree it just looks like an updated Fire hawks scheme:-

But in the end it dosnt really matter, if you can do it then go ahead

If your new to painting then I would paint up a test mini and show that off too if you can.

Personally I like the template you showed. Being a beginner though I think you will have trouble doing the fire. Also, the fire will increase the painting time by a lot. Well, for me it would as I do a lot of blending.

People above are right about "adding more colour". Not much, but something on the helmet would help. You want people to look at the face of the mini more then the other area's. Brightly painted eyes or a differently painted helmet could help? Or just some colour added to the helmet?

Overall, like I said, do a test paint on a mini. Its what I did and it took a few to get right.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

I like the "green" one, but perhaps try to make the shoulder pads a different colour?

I know that white helmets generally represent Veteran status. Do most chapter follow that color scheme, or only Ultramarines and their Successor Chapter?

I like the first scheme but I'd 'dull' down the yellow on the hands and feet; make it closer to orange than yellow.

To be honest, I really preferred your original scheme, though it's already been stated that it's very similar to the retconned Fire Hawks:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/xlarge/66-67st.jpg

But ask yourself "is that a bad thing?".
I realise you were going for your own take on Marines, but if you came up with something so startlingly similar to an existing scheme without any knowledge of it, why not embrace that Chapter, and customise it a little to your liking?

...Plus you'll have some cool rules and scenarios to use in the very near future!

As for the 'add more colour' posts above, why not use something tried and tested to do it?
Each Company of a (traditional Ultramarines successor) Chapter uses a different trim colour on the shoulder pads, or Raven Guard use the right pad trim colour to indicate unit role - Tactical, Assault, Devastator, etc.
Blood angels change the helmet colour to denote the same thing.
Plenty of options out there to customise your army, but remaining within prescribed templates and thus seating your army more securely within the 40K universe.

p.s. I hate the green. Sorry.

No!
Don't start down that road!
It's an addiction you'll never be free of!
In the near future you'll find yourself sat in a shop doorway, wearing a dirty suit, sat next to a shopping trolly (that's missing a wheel) stuffed with your minis, holding up a ragged piece of cardboard that reads
"will work for resin"

They are nice though...and just the one character couldn't hurt...could it?
