Can a Space Marine Captain go with a 5 man tactical squad in a drop pod or no?

Also, if you start the game with ten space marines, can they spit up then, or do you have to split them up in deployment and are they 180 points and take up two troop allowances or are they 170 points and only take one troop allowance?

Yes (page 67 BRB, dedicated transports), and you split the marines up on deployment (page 51 for codex: space marines, but for BA it's codex page 23). They retain the same cost as the 10 man squad that you purchased, and only take up one slot in the force org. When you split up the squad, you'll have to pick which one will contain your sergeant.

THANK YOU! I have had only negative responses to my idea. I am entering a tourney and a few people there say that I can't do the drop pod thing, so do you have a page in the rulebook/codex that says anything about it?

Yes, I've updated my original post to include the page numbers.

However, you cannot start a 5-man combat squad and the IC in the drop pod while starting the other 5-man combat squad elsewhere. If you want the 10-man squad to drop pod, the whole 10-man squad has to go in the pod and can be split when they land and get out.

You can however split them at the start of the game if they take a rhino or a razorback but splitting up when you have a drop pod always means you split after you land unless you land empty and everything has to be declared before you start your first turn. And while split squads only take up one FOC they give up 2 kill points.

No, because a 5 man Tactical Squad cannot buy a Drop Pod.

Darn, Gwar! is correct. I'm sorry I missed that in the Vanilla codex. If you're running blood angels, you can buy a drop pod for 5 guys. I got my codexes mixed up.

You can take the 10 man squad + the captain though, as the capacity is 12 models.

The capacity for a drop-pod is 10 models or one dreadnought in both SM and BA

In the dex I'm looking at (that says that tac squads must be 10-strong), it says 12 models, one dreadnought, or one thunderfire cannon. Is this not the right edition?

I agree that codex: blood angels says 10, but the OP is using vanilla marines i believe.

Space Marine Codex; pg 69 (naturally); DROP POD:

The Drop Pod has a transport capacity of 12 models.

Right for BA, wrong for 'vanilla' SM.

Rephistorch has it!

One of the advantages (for now) of the Vanilla SM Codex is that our Drop Pods and Land Raiders are strangely larger on the inside...

Well hey all the specialist codex marines get plenty of stuff the 'nillas dont get. Give us our few little joys that slip through the cracks. If you want more cargo space, then you have to quit deep-striking Land Raiders... fair tradeoff? didn't think so.

My drop pods land in a piece-meal fashion and can only hold 10 of us.

- Black Templars.

But our 'dex specifically says we get to shoot the drop pod weapons when we land. Neener Neener.

Yes, because our 2 BS2 stormbolter shots are incredibly terrifying.

I've wounded MCs with them before though, so you have a point.

Can't fire them when you land though.

I wasn't aware that drop pods can't shoot when they land, as per that BT comment a couple of posts ago. I assumed they could. Clarify anyone? (I have never even seen a BT codex, and don't play drop pod armies at all). It would be nice to know the facts for my opponents' sake. I don't recall the SM codex specifying that they cannot fire on the turn when they land and always assumed them to fire like any other deep striking unit could.

Sorry if that's a kind of dumb question and is probably common knowledge to anyone who uses the horrible things, but I am not that guy, so can someone clarify this?

Back onto the thread... The BS2 storm bolter can be explained in all sorts of fluffy ways. The Ultramarines are an all-around balanced army who nitpicks every detail, right down to having the most sophisticated targetting computers possible, while the Templars are a little looney and zealous and pay a lot more attention to praying and swordfighting, hence they don't bother with trivialities like that. I dunno, seems a decent fluff explaination to me. (we all know the real explaination, I'm just trying to look on the bright side here)

Vehicles cannot fire when moving cruising speed, which DS counts as.

Spods can, and in fact must do so, if targets are within range though!

To be fair, this is the one time they ARE consistent. Spod = MC, not a vehicle.
