Hey everyone! I'm looking to start an Eldar army soon. I was just looking for some advice on starting... anything really, I only have a 4e codex right now, that'll change soon, but, until then, what kind of armies to the Eldar offer? how do they work? what are some tried and true schemes? I apologize if this is in the wrong place... it's my first day on the forums... and if I'm in the wrong place, please be kind in telling me and I'll be more than happy to remove this, and post it where it needs to go

Thanks!

Well, you first need the actual codex, it was written in 4th ed.
I'd go for a mech Eldar army these days. Such an army is the most competitive at the moment.
Blackmoor might have some objection as he plays footslogging Eldar.

I'd buy the stuff at eBay. As a start, you need a Farseer, two 10 men squads of Dire Avengers, and two Serpents.
This is a decent start at the 500 pt level.
Then go up to 1000 pts by adding a unit of five Fire Dragons in a Serpent and some heavy support units,
either two Fire Prisms or a full squadron of War Walkers.

Adding to wuestenfux's advice :
The BattleForce box is a decent economical start. I added two more WarWalkers (plus a Guide Farseer) for some great anti-Infantry ... this is the full WarWalker squadron wuestenfux mentioned. Lastly, either 10 banshees or 10 scorpions for the hard hitting anti-I unit. Both work a little differently.

War walkers are just purely awesome, I mean the fire power is just insane.

The real key to the battle force is the wave serpent in combination with the walker I started similarly to Brothererekose and it was a great starting point I went ahead and bought a second battle force giving me

2 Warwalkers (quickly picked up a 3rd)
10 Dire Avengers
20 Guardians (arguably the worst part of the force, I made 1 squad then made the other 10 into storm guardians)
2 Wave Serpents

with the addition of a Farseer and other units you like you have an excellent start and models you will use no matter how many points you go up to in the future

Well, the Guardians are useful anyway.
In small pt games you can take one or two units on foot with heavy weapon platforms.
Deploy them in cover and they can provide fire support.
In larger pt games, you can mount them into Serpents.
In this way, they can be brought close to the enemy where they can unleash their assault rifles.

I know this is probably a bad Idea but I just recently played a game where I had Pheonix lord maugen ra combined with Eldrad using fortune/guide and Maugen ra and Eldrad were alive the whole game Maugen ra took out 80% of a troop of ork boyz that were accompanied by old Zogwart. Point of the story Farseer is well worth getting eldrad specifically is really tough to kill and casts 3 psych powers when not assaulting. He also makes war walkers better than usual.

I agree about Eldrad. Just make sure to keep him as part of a squad that can jump in the way of any Str 8+ attacks.
