In short, No, a HSL is not a Lasgun, for the same reason a Heavy Bolter is not a Bolter, a Plasma Pistol is not a Plasma Gun and a Doom of Malan'tai is not a Zoanthrope.

You can search and look up the other threads this has been done to death on (mostly when the codex came out). It's 100% clear RaW.

This is specifically addressed in the IG Faq. No First Rank Fire...for hotshot lasguns.

According to the FAQ Doom is a Zoanthrope, the Swarmlord is a Hive tyrant, etc.

I know it is in FAQ not errata; but:

This is the one case where I would rather have them state this in a single FAQ entry, instead of an errata; I don't need an extra half page added to erratas addressing each special Nid stating X is really a Y, that I then have to go in and paste into each relevant entry.

Personally, I think that was a good call. With the way the rules were worded it was a serious omission. Remember, errata is hard rules, FAQs are not.

Also if you look at the models it is very clearly a different weapon.
