Drone without a Controller

Hey Dakka. I'm gonna be starting High Elves soon, and I was wondering what you guys think would be the highest priority unit to get first for a take all comers list. I'm gonna be collecting a little bit at a time, so I won't have a viable army for a while. I just want to get started on one so I won't have a lot to paint all at once. Any suggestions on what I should get?

If you haven't picked it up already you should get the island of blood starter set. I don't play high elves myself but I believe there's about 1000 points worth of high elves in there (as well as skaven if you have a friend interested in them.)

you can easily resell the skaven for about $35 online.

Like aerethan said you could sell them off on ebay for a decent amount of money. Personally however I'd keep them, it's good to have a secondary army if a friend ever picks up interest in the hobby, or you just to want a change of pace from your current army. Regardless of what you want to do with the skaven if you end up buying the starter set, I think if you would pick up a box of archers you should be able to put together a sizable force.

Iob and a HE Battalion would be a good solid start. It puts you out $200, but you'll have all your bases covered to learn the game.
From there, I'd expand with a couple boxes of Phoenix Guard, and Sword Masters. And a box/blister or two of Nobles and Princes.

Listen to this man. Personally, the IoB box is nice for the rulebook but the selection of units is a little wonky. I'm new to the game too and I'm finding that writing an armylist with the IoB set is kinda limiting. In the battalion you get a chariot AND a bolt-thrower which gives you some more options.
But I must add, the IoB models are VERY nice.
