My recommendation if you're running a small unit of Dragon Princes - drop the command and get a 6th body instead. These guys shouldn't really be taking anything on head-on anyways, so you're better off having the extra wound/extra attack and keeping these guys relatively cheap.

If the Prince isn't carrying a shield, just give him a Great Weapon instead of the SoM. 3 points cheaper, gives you +2S at the cost of Magic attacks.

You'll be in trouble for the Break Point scenario, however.

I should probably read up on scenarios. Although my wife and I play mostly pitched battles so I'll have time to playtest.

Any thoughts on the rest of it?

Well, personally, I'm not terribly keen on Archers myself, but they should do exactly what you'd expect of them.

The list has fewer combat blocks than I would normally field and you'll definitely be relying on your Archmage to dole out most of the damage in the list. Still, combined hammer-assaults with the Lion Chariot and Dragon Princes should help push combats in your favor.

I'm presuming you're gonna put Caradryan and the Archmage in the PG unit? If so, the Archmage becomes incredibly vulnerable as you ideally want the Phoenix Guard in combat (too many points in this unit to just be baby-sitting your mage). In my experience with the 8th, I generally find my wizards dying in combat more than anything else (often owing to my own negligence -___-). I suppose the Lore of Shadows (I think), attribute can mitigate this somewhat, but the vulnerability of the Archmage is definitely something to be mindful of.

My other list has 2 spear blocks and the PG. Was fiddling around with seeing if archers would be better.

Good to know about the combat deaths to mages.

Some points:
your prince has two pair of magic armour. cant do that.
you cant use 3+ rare choices unless you play a 3000+ battle.
finally i'll say that only one wizard is a risky bussines even if he is an archmage.
i play with at least two.
you have four characters, and the three are fighters.
why dont you go 2 mages/2 fighters?
you'll have a more balanced force and more magical backup..

I completely missed the double magic armor and will rewrite this list tonight.

Keep in mind that this isn't really meant to be a tournie list.

The Prince is a Lvl1 Wizard from the Radient Gem of Hoeth.

The helm was a typo from a previous build. He's just sporting the armor.

The idea is that the lv4 takes the offensive magic while the prince takes buffs

My advice:

The high mage should always take life magic. The benefit to elves of this magic is too awesome. Your magic phase should look something like this:

roll 2 d 6 for winds of magic
roll d 3 for banner of sorcery

Cast throne of vines with 3 - 4 dice (depends on how many dice you rolled in winds and the likelihood your opponent will be able to dispell it and leave them dice to dispell other things.

Cast + 4 toughness on unit in combat or about to be in combat.

Cast regrowth, regeneration or dweallers based upon need and opportunity.

Don't take the radiant gem of hoeth. A wizard with the book of hoeth will use all of your dice every turn.

Throw your prince on an elven steed (not barded) give him the armor of caledor, a two handed weapon, the dawnstone, and then take something else if you want.

Take a bsb, put him in the unit with the dragon princes, give him defensive magic items as well as a two handed sword.

Give the champion of the dragon princes the item that makes all their attacks magical.

Give the standard bearer of the dragon princes the razor standard for armor peircing.

Drop the lion chariot (or the eagles) and add 5 more dragon princes (scrounge up 10 points from somewhere).

You now have two very tough very durable units in the army that can be buffed well with life magic. This is what will drive into your oppoennts armies. Keep the block of spearmen close to the block of pheonix guard so that when you are ready to get the pheonix guard stuck in the high mage can jump over to the spearmen unit.

The only time I would consider a second mage in an army is to take a cheap level 1 with the item that lets them pick their spells and the setting that guy up to cast the big spell you want with 6 dice one turn. Whether that is beasts transformation of Kadon, or any of the other big killer ones like purple sun, pit of shades, etc. I personally like transformation here as it throws a casting value of 21 out on the table which means if you get it off irrisitable and don;t kill your wizard he has to through 6 dice the next turn to dispell it which puts a serious hurt in his magic phase and what if he only rolls 4 dice for the magic phase.....
