First choose your time period for the Fists.

Pre heresy?

Just post heresy?

During heresy might step on a few toes.

40k?

Then decide your main characters. NO established characters except in background is a good idea.

Don't try and copy other stories.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR CHARACTERS

They're yellow, and love defending things. However, they can't spot traps very well. The Iron Warriors cleaned their clocks, and they lost the battle of Terra- Horus reached the Emperor. Overall, they're kind of the France of loyalist Space Marines.

They excel in defence. They're very stubborn and won't relinquish ground until they have to.

Due to their position as the Emperor's praetorians before and during the heresy they are very proud (some might say arrogant) and try to be the model of efficiency.
Some might say they try to outcodex the Ultramarines in their strict rules.

They use the Pain Glove to meditate. seeing it as a way to focus the mind.

They favour heavy weapons and crushing assaults when necessary.

if you look on the imperial fists description on the internet in the iron cage with the iron warriors it says the imperial fists were actually quite good at spotting traps and ambushing them, dont know whether that helps or not.

Hmm, did he, or would that be because the Emperor took the fight to Horus aboard his battle barge?

They were losing. Sanguinus almost died holding the Eternity Gate, and that's the entrance to the Throne Room itself. They were pretty damn close to losing.

Until the Ultramarines, Space Wolves and Dark Angels were nearing Terra. Horus knew that would've swung the battle in to the Emperors favour. That's why he dropped the shields and pretty much invited the Emperor on board.

Pretty close isn't losing though is it

Chaos won though depending on what way you look at it.

That doesn't change the fact that the Imperial Fists didn't 'win' the Battle of Terra. They were losing until the reinforcements could reach Earth.

No they didn't win, where did I say that the Imperial Fists 'won' the siege of Terra? There were other Legions fighting there too. If the Imperial Fists 'won' then they also 'won'.

The forces of Chaos retreated even before the reinforcements arrived. So in a way the Imperial fists and other loyalist chapters did win as they weren't defeated.
