This is my inspiration. Would work great as a desert or snow board as well.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I've got plenty of CoD buildings so I've gone urban. I've drawn roads on based around them, roads are black. Once finished I'll paint the basing grey giving a urban feel and add bit of flock to give colour - will look like a abandoned settlement.

What about a lava board as well?

I'm a fan of the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic City Building and Ruins kits. Nice and sturdy, with an acceptable level of detail. Not quite as intricate as the GW kits, but you get more bang for your buck. They're also compatible with other sets, so you can get any combination of large, small, or ruined sets then mix and match as you please. The kits snap together, so you can even assemble the wall sections and rearrange them at will, if you want flexibility more than the detail you can add to a permanent structure. They're generic enough that you could use them for 40K or Fantasy with no issue, or detail them in such a way that they fit one or the other.

For a super-snazzy example of what you can do with Pegasus kits and a healthy dose of conversion and paint, check out Sabol's cathedral display for Adepticon. http://leadbones.blogspot.com/2010/04/adepticon-2010.html

I think it would be cool to do kind of a variation on the lava idea, and do an arctic planet board with cryovolcanoes!

Must... not... grammer... nazi...

How would you keep the table white, with an arctic theme? I'd imagine it would discolor pretty quickly with use. My LGS's snow table went south in about a month.

This dude scratch builds terrain using corkboard and plasticard, he's got a little bit of everything:
