High Elf FAQ (my emphasis) wrote:
Page 102 – Book of Hoeth
Change to “Any spell cast by the bearer will be cast with
irresistible force on any successful casting roll which is a
double, however it will only be considered a miscast if the roll
includes a double 6.”
Page 66 – Teclis, High Loremaster
Change the last paragraph to “In addition, any spell cast by
Teclis will be cast with irresistible force on any successful
casting roll that is a double, however it will only be considered
a miscast if the roll includes a double 6.”
Both these rules were:
Any spell cast by [...] will be cast with
irresistible force on any successful casting roll which includes any
double, except a miscast.
The wording "any successful casting roll that is a double" implies
it only works when casting with 2 dice, and the wording for the miscasting
would also make sense, since if they didn't write "however it will only be considered
a miscast if the roll includes a double 6", they would
override the BRB, and BoH and teclis could only miscast on 2 dice.
What do people think, just a mistake in the FAQ, or overlooked nerf?

My take on it is that if you throw 2-6 dice at a spell with Teclis or the Book of Hoeth, and you meet or beat the casting cost of the spell, and you have any kind of double within those dice, it's cast with IF with no miscast. If it's double 6's then it's normal IF with a miscast and you don't need to meet or beat the casting cost.

{1,1,x,y,z} IS a double
No change, same as a triple IS 6 doubles.

well, I would say {1,1,x,y,z} contains a double, but {1,1} is a double, while {1,1,1} contains 3 doubles, but is a triple.
The BRB rules on Irresistible force specify 2 or more 6s, and the old BoH and Teclis specified a successful roll that includes any double.
Why change the wording from something unambiguous to something that can be interpreted?

i can actually see all side here, are there any other casters with rules like this/changes like this since 8th? It may have been a way to constrain Teclis' nastiness, but it's probably the typical "GW didn't realize its consumers dissect every thing ever written" error

I think it's relitively clear that RAI is any casting including doubles.
And on a side note GW needs to hire someone who's written specifications into their team, if you ever read an ASTM code they leave nothing to the imagination.

Too true on the ASTM
On another note, where is it written that Teclis or BoH need to meet the casting value to get a spell off with the doubles? I don't play Teclis, but against him and this would be nice to know.

Actually Greenbay, you don't even need the FAQ.
As per the High Elf Codex...
"Any spell cast by Teclis will be cast with irresistible force on any **successful** casting roll which includes a double, except a miscast"
The FAQ tells you to ignore the except a miscast part.
Book of Hoeth
"Any spell cast by the mage with this book will be cast with Irresistible force on any **successful** casting roll which includes any double, except a miscast"
Its right there in the High Elf Codex, you need to meet the casting value first.

Probably written by the same guy who said ASF and equal or higher initiative lets you re-roll "failed misses".
Since "failed misses" equal hits this rule as written makes no sense either. However I think we all know what it really means.
