I prefer themed armies over pure tournament armies but at the same point I want to be able to compete in the games I play.

So my question stands; Is a pure Khorne army with no casters and magic resistance items only a viable tabletop army. How well will just charging across the board work out?

If it is viable, am I looking for more number heavy units than quality? (I know, that sounds odd with a WoC army.) By that I mean marauder heavy as opposed to warrior heavy.

The army I am looking at building is based around 2 warrior units at 18 models. 1 with extra hand weapons and the other with halberds. Complementing them is a large 8-10 man troll unit with throgg.

Thoughts?

Yes and No.

Against magic heavy armies you will struggle to get rid of all the hex's and buffs. Not to mention your army will then have the quickest Magic and Shooting phase so your turn will be March, Dispell Remains in Play, CC.

I have played the army and have had mixed results. IT can be fun, it really depends on how many units you can get across the table.

As said difficult against some magical heavy people like slann and high elves, but it can really kill a lot of stuff. From a fluff point of veiw it is cool, no doubt. From a gaming perspective we already don't really participate in the shooting phase, so why gimp yourself even more with no magic?

If by viable you mean competitively, not really, but it's themed and themed lists rarely are. That isn't why we play them.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

I am just starting out so I want my army to be viable but I also want to have fun painting it as well. Do I need to win a local tourney, no. Do I want to lose every game because I lack certain aspects of the game, no.

I guess that brings me to my next question... what magic items are completely necessary to negate shooting and magic to help an all Khorne army get across the field to do its killing?

Well any item that grants ward saves or MR would be beneficial.

WoC Items: Blasted Standard (best item), I would also look at Favor of the Gods (reroll eye of gods), and then I'll go out on a limb and say a warshrine will help, and a hellcannon or two.

BRB Items: Rampagers Standard, Banner of Swiftness, Lichebone Pennant, Ironcruse Icon.

As for tatics your going to want to saturate your enemy with targets. So warriors, hounds, marauders, marauder horsemen and knights. Give them too many options to shoot at so there is a better chance to get accross the field.

If you find the army struggling you can always add a Sorcerer without a mark for some better magic defense.

People say marauder hordes are one of the best things about Warriors of Chaos, so just negate shooting and magic by having mass numbers of dudes.

@Ordo Dakka: Your sig is wrongly credited to me, never in my life would I write that stuff. I believe the real person who wrote that was jaggedjaw. You should really think about joining his democratic dictatorship, I heard it has great health benefits.

2 Chaos Hellcannons can help out with magic! But yes sadly the current MoK doesnt give any additional anti magic buffs (generating 8 additional DD back then was pretty fun)

Heres a little idea, I don't know how much it jives with the khorne/WOC backstory, but it might be an idea to just have a lvl1 countermagic sorcerer on your side, not to throw out any spells but just to carry a dispel scroll, aid in the dispell phase and knock off remains in play during your own phase.

From what I know about Khorne he hates magic so having a guy around focused of messing with casters would probably be well in his favour.

While i am somewhat new to 8th and have only had a few games, i have seen a non-magic army pull off a win more than a few times.
However, its seems to be either end of the scales.
They either destroy the other army quickly, or get destroyed quickly.

In general though you will need to make sure warmachines can be taken out quickly, or stopped from firing.
So hounds or marauder horsemen will be a blessing here.

Ive actually taken your idea a themed step further, and gone all mounted aswell.
Granted, i do struggle quite a bit in some games, and when teclis is involved i tend to just play for an amusing outcome.
But it is pretty amusing how well it can work at times.

Keep in mind marauders stats arent that bad, throw them flails and they are decent.
At 5 points thats even better.
Throw a unit or 2 of 36+ marauders on the table and use them to soak shooting, tarpit, or just win combat (rare to see a tarpit win, but they can)

I would also take posted advice on items.
While you wont stop it all that often, its allways best to take what you can as certain spells can really feth with you. (mainly those that change or alter movement)

Just a quick follow on to my last post

I would take atleast 4 units of 5 hounds if your using MoK on anything.
Use them to block your own charges and keep expensive units from being baited over the whole board.
