I'm looking for feedback on the list I currently run. I would like to know how terribly it stacks up on the competitive scene, and what I should be swapping out.

HQ
Company Command Squad - 4x Meltagun, Chimera/145pts

Troops
Veteran Squad - 3x Meltagun, Chimera/155pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Meltagun, Chimera/155pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, Chimera/170pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, Chimera/170pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, Chimera/170pts

Heavy Support
Leman Russ Battle Tank Squadron (3) - /450pts

Leman Russ Demolisher Squadron (3) - /495pts

Leman Russ Executioner Squadron (3) - /570pts

I really like tanks. A lot. I was wondering if I should cut down the squadrons to two tanks each, or even one each to make room for hellhound variants (not the banewolf) or possibly artillery. I hear air cav is solid, but I'm just not a fan of the valk model. Also, I have 20pts to spare, what should I upgrade? Drop a melta gun in the CCS and add an advisor?

I've had a lot of fun with this list, and it performs admirably against my local club, but obviously runs into difficulty as well. Any critique/feedback is welcomed, be harsh!

First of all, a disclaimer - the squadron rules are actually very punishing for heavy tanks, so this is not really a completely tuned list. That said, guard with lots of vehicles are so nasty that it won't make a huge difference unless you play exclusively against other hyper-competitive lists. A lot of your tactics will have to revolve around protecting your russ squadrons from units with 3+ meltaguns, which can whip them off the board double quick.

You should seriously cut the squadrons down to 2 tanks each. 3 is just too inflexible. Use the points to buy hellhound-type tanks. I think a hellhound w/hull multimelta is the best type. Similar tank-killing capacity to a devil dog, better anti-troop. You could consider a 6th veteran squad as well.

I am not a fan of executioners, especially as you've taken them. Consider - 190 points, you could get a LRBT with plasma sponsons (or an exterminator w/plasma sponsons, which I've heard spoken well of as a transport and infantry killer) instead. Those choices are a lot less vulnerable to weapon destroyed results and can do far more damage against their prime targets.

The more I think of it, I would actually advocate taking 2 exterminators w/plasma in place of the current executioner squadron. Your list currently lacks anything to kill armour at range - and almost every smart player these days fields a load of AV10-12 vehicles.

Just to reiterate, squadrons of 3 russes are just a huge loss in flexibility, and if a unit shooting at you gets lucky, instead of one tank unable to do anything next turn, it can be 3 tanks. Not to mention the already harsh immobilised=destroyed rule.

Summary: cut a russ from each squadron, changing the remaining executioners to exterminators w/plasma sponsons. (-505 points) Add 2 hellhound w/multimeltas and 1 unit of veterans w/meltaguns in a chimera (445). That gives you 60 spare points or so, go nuts. I dunno, buy some demolitions upgrades or cut something and take a psyker HQ, whatever.

I would get more meltaguns than plasma. With a bunch of LM already taken, anti MEQ weapons should be plentiful while anti tank weapons area bit lacking

Based off the feedback above, here's what I think I'll try soon.

HQ
Company Command Squad - 4x Meltagun, Chimera/145pts

Troops
Veteran Squad - 3x Meltagun, Demolitions, Chimera/185pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Meltagun, Demolitions, Chimera/185pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Meltagun, Demolitions, Chimera/185pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, Chimera/170pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, Chimera/170pts

Fast Attack
Hellhound - Multi-melta/145pts

Hellhound - Multi-melta/145pts

Hellhound - Multi-melta/145pts

Heavy Support
Leman Russ Battle Tank Squadron (2) - /300pts

Leman Russ Demolisher Squadron (2) - /330pts

Leman Russ Exterminator Squadron (2) - Plasma Cannon Sponsons/380pts

Dropped a tank from each squadron, replaced executioners with exterminators w/plasma, added three hellhounds w/MM, and switched a plasma squad for a melta squad. All the melta squads are also demolitions now too. Still looks the way I like my Guard to look, with some more variety for both mech and horde. I still have 15 pts kicking around, but I'll think of something. Thanks for the feedback!
