Do you make a list and go buy those models? or do you just buy what you think is cool and throw it into a list. I ask because i cant decide what i want to do with my guard i have a list but i am constantly changing my mind on units or not sure i like that i just have to buy those models. But if i did do this i would save money by buying only what i need. On the other hand it is fun to be able to just pick from your men cause your have so many.. But the clearly isn't money effective.. What do you do? Becuase i really cant decide.

I proxy what I'm thinking of buying and play a few games to see how they play. Then I save up or convert another unit to get what I want.

I usually proxy for a while.

I Buy the most expensive things first, usually. That way i can get them out of the way to spend more money later.

Like my chaos army. I've got a defiler, a land raider, daemon prince, terminators, vindicator, 4 bikes....And then I've got a single unit of CSM!

Well I used to buy when I was younger so I just bought what looked cool and made what looked cooler. But now I see that can be a huge waste of money so I decided what I need or what next then shop about for it.

I view one of the sets I like, then I view how it would fit in my army.
Then I think of the optional upgrades I can take.
Then I buy it, assemble it and paint it with care.

If I'm starting a new army, I figure out a 500pt list, and buy that. I play games until I know where I want to go with another 500pts, then another 500pts. When I'm at 1500pts, I just start buying other stuff I want that didn't make it into the 1500pt list.

I write a 2000point list (maybe a few extra things added in just because I like them). It generally takes me a few months to come up with a solid list that'll be fun to play, has good models, isn't too boring to paint and doesn't require any horribly difficult to get parts.

Then the whole army is purchased, built and painted. At some point in the that process I'll order cases for storing it as well.

I've had multiple high point lists, but they always change every few weeks, especially with what I keep reading here!

I buy my models one or two at a time and paint squads of troops in between vehicles. I use the vehicles as an incentive to finish doing the work on the troops which can get a little mind numbing!

My only issue now is that I keep on getting the bulk of the vehicle done and then skimping on the turret gunner, so now I do the details bit first!

At least with guard there are some common troops most people always use, so I'd get those first and get good with them before you start buying the more obscure stuff.

I buy what models I think fit the theme of what I want. Since I don't really use 40k as a rule set, prefering other rules the stats or allowed units in 40k have no influence on my purchases.

I initially did buy the Battle For Macragge set, and got extra stuff to allow playing all the extra missions. So that was an initial influence. Since then I 've very much shifted from 40k as a rule set and fill out my amies (1st Cav using Space Marines and Bugs using Tyranids) with what I want based on how cool the model is or how it fits into MY vision of the army.

Yeah, I buy what models I like and if the rules or play work out, so be it.

I just make a list, get what I need over a period of time. Then after that, just keep on buying stuff. Make your army limitless. Make three possible armies into one. Then get to apoc and such.
