The painting of the basic troops for my Emerald Lions home made marine chapter have been going along quite well, but I decided to take a short break to do some modelling of the assault squad that will help deal death in a fairly quick moving marine army. None of them are painted, but they will end up with the same quartered green and white pattern of my previous test model.

My powerfist wearing sarge.

A regular assault marine trooper

A fun experiment that I thought turned out better than expected.

Another basic trooper.

The group shot.

These guys will end up painted after I get some more work done on my bike squad and commander.

Some obnoxious mold lines on that power fist. I do like the standard bearer you made.

love the standard bearer, those shields seem way too small thou, i used them on the jumppacks as decoration, i think they are too small to be shields

I like the bucklers actually being used as bucklers.

They look really cool, but might I suggest some more 'dynamic' poses? Like they're meant to be troopers who fly/jump/whatever into battle yet you have them all on foot. Just a suggestion and as I said, they look awesome.

I love the way that banner spear thing looks, what kit did that come from? Or did you make it yourself?

I'd suggest adding some little details to tie the Empire bits in a little more with the marines. Especially the banner bearer could do with some tubing etc. around the banner armour and head.

The only shield that really seems small to me is the one in the second picture, I thought for a moment it was one of those little shield looking things that you stick just below a terminator's shoulder pad.

Other than that they look good, I always enjoy looking at assault marines.

Thanks for the responses. I was just playing around with stuff from my bits box, and there was an old Empire cavalry unit in there. Not sure which one to be honest. Almost all of the bits came from there. The standard bearer was a straight arm swap with a spear head modeled onto the blunt end.

I wanted the shields to not be massive like storm shields, so the size is perfect as a buckler. I just look at the storm shields from the terminators and couldn't imagine trying to control something like that while in the air.

As to the mold lines on the power fist, I knew there were still some to clean up but it isn't nearly as visible when I look at the model in person.

Good looking squad... Very individual.

Just started my first assault squad this weekend, my marines had a gene-seed transplant to BA and i really needed them.

What are you gonna run the banner carrier as? normal assualt marine cant take one can they?

Just because I don't care, Doesn't mean I don't understand!

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

So the one issue I can see with the Storm Shields is that shields typically aren't worn on the fist. Shields are worn on the forearm so that the force of a blow can be better distributed. Not to mention that if you were to fly forward, a shield facing forward would slow you down pretty badly.

I think you should try to put on a shield on the forearm the same size as a fantasy chaos warrior. Just see what you think.

They aren't really intended to be used as Storm Shields, but bucklers. I didn't want the shields to be so big that they over powered the idea of the mobility. A buckler is worn over the fist for increased flexibility of movement and deflection of incoming strikes. It just seemed like a better look than having as just the bolt pistol and chainsword option. I've also always thought that it was strange that only assault terminators were smart enough to carry a shield into a sword/hammer fight.

Other things that were used from the old bits box that are not really visible in the pictures is that each has a plastic laurel attached to their jump pack. With all of the shield in the squad having a combination of laurels, crosses and lion heraldry I thought it tied things together quite nicely considering the idea being based on a Templar army.

I might use the some of the larger Empire shield currently available as bits right from GW on some of my bolter armed marines though. Hiding behind the shield and firing away with the bolter sounds like the type of thing a marine might do for mobile cover. If nothing else it would break up some of the boring 'holding the bolter with 2 hands' poses.
