Hey guys I need a favor. I am working on painting my mechanized guard army, its kinda Russian based, so built and bred for winter combat (or at least that's the idea). I have decided on a paint scheme for my guardsmen themselves and I've picked one for all the combat tanks, the only problem is my chimeras. I think it would be kinda cool to have a distinction between the combat tanks (russ's,hellhounds, ect.) and the transports. here is what I have so far.

this is the paint scheme I'm using for my infantry (mostly veterans), I apologize for the poor lighting, I'm new to this whole picture taking business.

this is the paint job for the combat vehicles.

this is the one chimera i have painted, i got the idea from a picture of a ww2 T34 that had been captured by the Germans that was painted like this. i just can't decide if i should do them all this way or if i should paint this one and the rest of them the same as the Leman Russ's. Its ridiculous i have three more chimeras sitting unpainted on my shelf and every time I get ready to paint one i second guess myself until l eventually just quit. Its Driving me crazy, you guys gots help me decide.

This is as close as i have to hat a chimera would look like with the other paint job, so what do you guys think?

Sure no problem. first I dry bushed the whole tank pretty heavily with boltgun metal. Then i painted vermin brown (if you're doing blood angels you might want to mix in a darker color like beastial brown so it showes up better) anywhere i wanted rust to be, don't worry about putting to much on because most of it will be covered up later anyway. then I dry brushed a layer of codex gray (you might want to go with something like scab red or gore red, something that is a significantly darker than you final color) on over that until it covered almost all of the boltgun. Then I dry brushed on a layer of skull white (or in your case blood red) on top of that, thats the layer where you get all the shadows and such, really you can do this as heavily or lightly as you want depending on what you want the end result to be. That's really it, after that its just a matter of painting the details. You may also choose to water down whatever paint you used to make rust in the beginning and reapply it over the original depending on how weathered you want it to be.

If you end up painting a Baal Predator like this you should throw up some pictures. I'd love to see it.

Oklahoma City, Ok.

I'd paint them like the russ.

eh, it doesn't seem to make much sense to have only the chimeras with the green. I'd either paint them all grey (or perhaps a dark grey/light grey camo), just like the russes, or I'd go back to your other vehicles and add the green.

So you might also want to try doing a base coat of black primer, paint them completely green. Then take whatever white you got and on a ratty brush gloop it in the white, and just smear it across the tank. I say this because you said you were going for a russian kind of feel. Most tanks come off the assembly line in 3 colors: Green, Grey, and Desert Yellow. When it comes to camo, that's usually left up to the troops in the field. Most of the time during WW2, for winter camo, they'd just get buckets of white paint, a mop, and just start smearing that stuff all over the tank. So you're effectively doing the same with a ratty brush and some white paint over your green tank. You can probably find some examples on google.

Something like this:

The last could probably be done with a sponge though. Which would also work.

Yeah I guess I could do that, I'd probably go with the sponge thing though just so I don't have to completely repaint 4 Leman Russ's and a hellhound.

I think these tanks would benefit greatly from some squad markings, or maybe something like an insignia (maybe a red star, or even a hammer and sickle)

The weathered look is really great, but I feel like you need something to break it up and catch the eye.

Agreed. The above is fine for chimeras. You might put squad or other markings on it, to help differentiate them slightly. Plus nose or hull art would be a nice touch to think about. Just think Memphis Belle.

The vehicles with the green fade-I'd lose that as it doesn't quite match.

Oh yeah I definitely agree I plan on adding some to them, I also want to add names to the Russ's as well. I just wanted to get them up to tabletop quality first so i didn't feel like a loser with a bunch of gray models, then add details later.
