I need to make a homemade wash out of black acrylic paint. I will use distiller water but don't know the ratio of water to paint. If anyone has a good recipe for this please let me know.

What I do is just add water until it is a good consistancy, kinda like skim milk.

So just the paint and distiller water is all I need?

Yes. But it won't be like the GW washes...

To like a GW-ish wash... you'd better off using black ink, some distilled water and matte medium.

He used to sell it commercially, but there were issues with regulation and such, so he just posted how to make it. Just takes a little digging.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I just use any paint color I want to make a wash from and make a mix of about 50% water, 25% paint and 25% matte medium. Add more water if you want it lighter, add less if you want it darker you really just have to experiment to get it right since every color is different.

I always thought it was like powdered milk (or baby powder?) just add water.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

Adding water will work to a degree. It just doesn't cover as well.

Adding a flow aid helps the wash travel into all the little cracks and crevices of the model without pooling or running all over the place. Matte medium also works as a flow aid as well as reduces the shine that is caused by using inks. Neither are required, technically, but they are great tools to have around.

I second this wash. I made me a batch recently and am very happy with the results.
