Hello,

So I've decided to reorganise my fair sized Imperial Guard army. I've taken inventory of all the basic troops, along with all the heavy and special weapons along with the number of sergeants I have (max number of squads I could make.)

I was wondering if someone could give me some suggestions as to how I would rearrange these troops into two platoons. I've already made up the command squads so you don't have to worry about those.

If it helps I mainly play against Tyranids, Orks and Chaos Space Marines and like to have specialised squads (anti-tank squad, mobile support squad etc.)

Normal troops (no special weapons etc.) - 71
Autocannon - 3
Lascannon - 3
Grenade Launcher - 3
Flame Thrower - 4
Missle Launcher - 3
Meltagun - 1
Plasma Gun - 1
Heavy Bolter - 3
Sgt's - 10

Make one platoon around 30 men, each squad with a flamer. Give every sergeant a power weapon, and then give them a commissar with a power weapon. That is the best assault unit IG can muster, and is quite effective against anything but an all-out assault army (notably orks, also space wolves and blood angels if they're not too focussed on elite choices)

Make the other of 30 men or so, with GL/AC or just with lascannons. This squad can also benefit from a commissar, but it's not as mandatory as for the assault version.

Some general tips: I think most people use combined squads of 20 or 30 men . . . once you hit 40 the unit is very large indeed, and hard to maneuver. I personally would give every squad either a special weapon and a power weapon, or a special weapon and a heavy weapon. Blob squads should either have a commissar or be supported by a regimental standard, to stop them running off. Opinion differs, but for special weapons GLs are the cheapo option, flamers are seldom taken in the same squad as a heavy weapon, sniper rifles are god-awful. Heavy weapons, mortars aren't usually taken in infantry squads, HBs are categorically worse than autocannons for the same price, missile launchers are often considered a poor compromise between las- and autocannons, but can be really good (against tyranids for example). Don't take too many HWS or SWS compared to regular infantry, they're much easier to destroy.
