I'll start with how I interpret the points for 9 Blood letters, 3 gifts for the unit, one herald, and 3 gifts for him.

Bloodletters 16points x 9 = 144 points
Gifts: Chaos Icon, Instrument of Chaos, Fury of Khorne 40 points

Total Bloodletter = 188 points

Herald 70 x 1 = 70 points
Gifts: Fury of Khorne, Death Strike, Iron hide: 40 points

Total Herald = 110 points

With all that in mind:

Is a Herald really doing me much good? 110 points seems steep
Under what circumstances if any would a unit like this dominate?

298 points for a 10 man with a herald seems crazy considering all the units are 5+ saves. They get swated like flies! These guys got buried by a 6 man templar unit with an emperors champion. Also why in the world is it called Daemonic Assult when after you deep strike in you can't assult?

I would first of all give the herald one of the mount choices, each which change the use of him dramaticly.
The chariot gives you a cheapo psedo-daemon prince. Give him might and maybe rending (for dreads) and you got a nasty little lone model unit right there, for an affordable price.

If you don't want to run him alone give him the juggernaut, everytime. It is pretty much iron hide + might in one package, plus a wound and an attack FOR 5 POINTS. Give him rending and might and you are golden.

Summary: avoid running him on foot, just buy more letters in that case.

My quick and easy guide to Heralds.

1) Basic Nurgle and Khorne Heralds are not worth it, as they are merely glorfied versions of their troopers. More Troops would be better/cheaper and they score.

2) Slaaneshi and Tzeentch Heralds are worth it if you put them on their respective chariots. The increased speed and durability plus the added tank busting power turns them into small Daemon Prince equivalents.

I'm slighly confused here, how can you say that the slaneesh herald is a mini-DP but not the Khorne on chariot.
A Khorne herald on chariot got the excact same stats as a DP, costs 5 more points but gain a 3+ save. (He loses MtC and +d6 pen though)
And I have to say that the slaneesh herald on chariot seems kind of subpar if you compare it to fiends or seekers...

I shouldn't say anything though, as I don't play daemons.

Sorry about that, I wasn't clear on my point.

What the Khorne Herald is missing is a speed boost, which I always think of as a mandatory upgrade for DPs.
The Slaaneshi Herald has Fleet and the Tzeentch Herald is Jump Infantry, so both of them have a way of increasing their movement and assault threat range.

As for the Slaaneshi Herald, s/he is a pretty good buy. 75 points buys your a quick unit with multiple wounds and S5 Rending on the charge. I would say its better then 2 Fiends for around the same price.

With my limited experience playing with daemons:

I find Khorne to be fairly useless. With deep striking everything, you're going to take a lot of casualties from shooting in the turn you arrive. The surviving models need to close the gap and assault turn 2. Khorne can't do this and you get chewed up long before you can get in and assault.

Nurgle can work too, not because they can close the gap (obviously), but because they are VERY difficult to kill and can survive the ~2 rounds of shooting they have to take in order to assault. Khorne can't even survive as effectively as Nurgle.

As a thought, you could overload your opponet with multiple small units. If you don't have BloodCrusher or don't like them, then consider running 4 Heralds of Khorne on Chariots (plus unholy might, Fury, and blessing)

Combo up with 2 or 3 Maxed out Fiend Units plus maybe 1-3 Deamon princes. You can create very hard hitting wave, slower units can get picked off by the princes and heralds, while the fields clear out fast units and massive units.

side note: I love it when Mephiston or Libraians charge Chariot Heralds... Blessing ftw.
