Now the idea for this is they both will be used for supporting fire as my army moves forward but here's the thing. I have 1 unit of autocannon havocs laying down fire to open transports/wounds MC's, so I can take 2 of the others, 2 defilers or 4 oblits.

The play style with the oblits is to use the icons to drop them in and lend heavy plasma/melta fire to soften something up before my marines hit home. Now those oblits will likely be charged/wiped away but their purpose has been used as more often than not their target is a smoking crater/limping near death. The downside is possibly they don't arrive when I need them to and sitting them in the back dropping plasma cannons isn't their purpose in the list, that is what the defilers would fall in.

The defilers would provide soaking fire drawn away from the rhinos and if ignored they would move/fleet assault anything unlucky enough in claw reach. Battle cannons roaring and 1 reaper arm in case that goes so still able to crack something open.

I run about 16-18 berzerkers with Kharn and 20 chaos marines with 2 melta/fist/icon of glory for meat to the grinder so infantry killing is peaked, just the anti tank needs tweaking.

Thoughts? Which would be the better choice for this kind of list?

Do you want a battle cannon scattering into your bezerkers?
Normally I don't field ordnance weapons with assault troops for that reason.

I would go with the oblits as they can also crack open transports at range, allowing your bezerkers to assault the troops, not the transport.

Normally the battle cannon fires in the beginning turns as things move out and there aren't that many bodies on the field, used more of a separation device with other transport armies, cutting off a flank allowing my column to swallow up scattered units and sweep around.

Once the bodies leave the transports the defiler would scuttle forward to join the fray.

While Defilers might be a more fluffy choice, I think Oblits are going to serve an assault army better because they are better at opening transports like Labmouse said. Battle Cannons aren't bad but you'll get better results typically with 2 BS4 Lascannons for the same price.

How many Havocs do you have already?

I've found Obliterators to be the more reliable Can Openers and Tank Poppers. They can Deep strike in where it matters and get two shots off immediately. If it works they made points. If not, they are usually hearty enough to hang for one more turn. Then they can shoot AND assault. I just wish they still had chainfists. Hell, the models LOOK like they have chainfists (because when the model was made they had them!).

Defilers get shaken and lose weaponry too fast to count on their shooting to take out tanks. And most tanks can keep distance from a Defiler without a gun.

If you want a cc heavy CSM army, then go for some MCs, like DPs, GD and also Dreads and Defilers.

I have gone back and forth about this for a while, but I would take defilers over obliterators any day. There several reasosn:

-Daemonic possession is like a 5++ save

-They are tall enough to see over dreads and rhinos, so LOS is typically not a problem

-I find the 72 inch range of a battle cannons to be very helpful, since it lets you put a hurting on basically everything on the table. Also, strength 8 is nice for popping Nobs or nob bikers

-Its a walker with 3-5 strength 10 attacks depending on how you equip it. So, you can shoot all you want, and when you need to you can charge in and flip over a tank, eat a squad of marines, or more importantly, punch out big threats like nobs, blood crushers, or thunderwolves. Granted, 1 defiler is not an absolute counter to one of these units by any means, they certainly help out more than obliterators.

Overall, I feel like a defiler proves to be more resillient, more capable of putting its firepower where it needs to be, and it capable of handling multiple roles.

Falcon Punch!
