For SM, I've been running;

Bike Command
Melta x 4
LC x 4
SS x 4

...for some time. Had great success with it. Yeah it's expensive but it hits like a ton of bricks and really doesn't go away very quickly. You can bust a tank, usually tear up whatever is inside then survive the next turn's dakka. I've also ran;

Foot Command
Plasma x 4
Powerfist

....to some success but not as much.

BA Honor Guard Squads

I've been running;

Jumppacks
4 x Melta
4 x Flamer

Pretty much destroys whatever tank/horde I point it out. Not too terrible expensive either.

What's your favorite command squad/honor squad kit?

I like 4x Plasma and Bikes for vanilla. A bit pricey but tough and can dakka up a lot of things and charge too. It seems that most commands are usually good for special weapons

I have a champion, a bolter, a melta gun, my techmarine, a banner (Company standard OR chapter banner) and a Novite. They are great support for my frontline infantry, and make a good charge into combat. Will be giving them a rhino soon so their little aura of win can extend farther, and they have some kind of cover.

Something to consider is the cost of the prerequisite captain. So saying, Suicide meltas in a pod is doable. Meltas in a razor is ok, I like to put 4 plasma, and an apothecary in a rhino.

Well, Plasma seems to be popular with them. I suppose that's due to the FNP saving overheats....or is there more of a demand for Plasma in marine armies now?

It is not the most efficient use of points. Sternguard with combi plasma would be better in most situations. You get the plasma for that first shot and then the special ammo. Also you don't have to buy the captain. For fun games it does hold its own. It's not bad but you can do better points wise.

So saying, if you have to have a command squad then this is a cheap one points wise. The Apothecary does help with overheats. Other than kitting out a cc monster on bikes with ss, ect. This is one of the better(IMO) ways to go.

From what I have seen most marine armies, plasma is not used because of overheats. Lots of people use melta because of all the armor that is out there.
