Hello guys,

I was WHFB player from about 03/04 till 08 since which time I have been out of all things Game workshop. Now I am back and desperate to get going again and make use of the hordes of models I have locked up in my cupboard. That said this time I want to get into 40K and actually play a game (having learnt all the fourth editions rules started assembling marines but never got a game). It will be quicker for me to get a 40K force painted than my dwarves/high elves which will have to go unloved for a bit longer.

I need advice on my prototype list which I am in progress of assembling and painting.

How does that seem? Its built mainly on models I have (also have a captain, venerable dread, predator with tl las cannon but missing sponsons, normal lib, assault marines). I know it needs some work. Sort of based it on what I have read on other peoples threads here.

Which is the best land raider for this kind of force? Reason I wanted to get the list sorted is so I don't spend money on models I ultimately won't use (being a student means I don't have much).

Changed as per suggestion below. Would like to know which Land raider is best as I was given mine in poor conditions and its missing all the weapons so got to find them all.

Drop the Assault Marines and add in a second Dreadnought with the same setup as your first. Use the extra points to buy a Storm Shield for your Librarian and a Rhino for your third Tactical Squad and I'd say you have a good setup for a starter list!

Looks alright TBH. I guess you're going to combat squad the Tacticals? Oh, Crusader is good with multi melta.

Whats a TL, on a dreadnought?

I would exchange the multi-melta for a missle launcher, they are a hard weapon to use...

The only other thing I would suggest is exchangeing one or two of th flamers in the tactical squads for meltaguns. It will give you the ability to easily crack 14AV vehicles.

Other then that, its a good list.

As a basic army its pretty sound, i asume the librian is going with the termies, other than that for a bit of tactical flexibility mabye either the predator or the assualt marines instead of one of the dreads. it depends in who your playing or how you want to play

If you are starting with nothing. I would suggest The "Black Reach" Box set. Current rules,Templates, ect. If you know any ork players who want to buy all of the Orks or Ebay them, to recover some of the money from the box set.

I would think about changing one of the LC,ML Dreads for a 2xTL AC ("Rifleman") Dread and using the 20 points to give your LR Extra Armour and one of the squads a melta gun.

Otherwise, its a solid list imo.

(One more suggestion, which may get flak from most of the people here, but I like changing out the LRC to an LRR with a multi melta. You don't need the extra transport space, and you have 3 full tactical squads for massed bolter fire. I like flamestorm cannons, but other people on Dakka don't seem to be as thrilled. YMMV)

Nice idea on the Dread sounds like potential modification to the list later on. Right now I am two twin linked autocannon arms short of having a rifleman dread. The spare points would be nice for LR extra armour or adding a multimelta to it.

resinmann - I own almost all of it, ATM just need two rhinos second dread, terminator lib and the crusader upgrade pack for the LR. Scouring ebay atm. The black reach box might of been an idea but I already had so much from previous edition and what I got given.

Quick question about combat squads and transports - Can I split the tactical squads in half and deploy half in rhino and the other half on the board? Do I have to wait till they disembark to split them up? Does a unit with a transport have to deploy in the transport or could the squad and the rhino be deployed separely place separately? Just asking as I guess in not every scenario will it be good idea to rush off to my openents side of the board if I need to hold objectives and what not.
