I'm considering starting a Tyranid Army, and I can allocate ~$500 to do so.

I need some help picking which models to buy to start my army.

Here's what I've been thinking:

--Battleforce * 2
----Warriors * 6
----Genestealers * 16
----Hormagaunts * 32
----Termigants * 32
----Ripper Swarms * 6
--Hive Tyrant
--Hive Guard * 6
--Gargoyle * 20
--Carnifex * 3 (partly for use as Tervigons)
--Trygon * 2

Are Carnifexes the best base model to make into a Tervigon?

My list would use several Tervigons and I think any Termigants they spawn would be represented by the Hormagaunts models from the Battleforce boxes, as they'd have close combat upgrades.

Can anyone offer guidance?

Chapterhouse Studios makes a really nice resin Tervigon conversion kit for the Carnifex for $22.50. Well worth checking out

The chapterhouse tervigon kit is really nice. It looks a lot like the artwork in the book. However... it's standing too tall for its bulk and looks wrong, stature wise. But it looks like the image on their site was hastily thrown together. Wouldn't mind seeing one that's built properly and painted.

Chapterhouse also have really, really awesome Ymgarl heads.

Well, in their description they say "their version" of GW's tervigon. Maybe it has to do with IP?

Not like being hunched over is any more of an IP infringment than standing up. Standing up it just looks odd. It's like an elephant walking on the rear legs of a horse.
