Hi folks, last month I sculpted some spiders (4) for Otherworld miniatures, they were about 20mm and fitted on 25mm bases... To continue the spider theme, I was commissioned to sculpt some nasty big spiders (2 of them) to fit 40mm bases.

So for October news here are the greens for the new Big spiders set ( they are black widows and have the clock mark beneath abdomen.

And a scale shot

I must say 2 things are bugging me as a look at these:
1. The subjects are green, so why a green background?
2. The way the spider rests on the legs looks wrong

Other than those two things and a little lack of detail I love, these look alright, nothing ground breaking in my eyes. YMMV

I think the awkward resting is just a result of putting a giant giant spider on a base too small for it. Cast it in metal and the legs can easily be bent however you wish.

"I was commissioned to sculpt some nasty big spiders (2 of them) to fit 40mm bases."

Personally, I like these spiders.

Well let me say I'm not Otherworld, these are not official pictures and are just my crappy efforts as a photography man to give people a quick glimpse of some greens I done... since colors are errrr secundary watching a "green" the monochrome choice doesnt seem much ofending to me as long as pictures are not blurred.

THe position is one of miliion solutions... with thin legs like those you can position/ bend every leg in almost infinite combinations and since all of them will be casted( in metal) separated you can interchange them in hundreds of combos... in short you can shape the spiders the way you want them and have tons of diferent spiders with just these( in fact you dont even need a base if you dont want to.

As for my undetailed crap I cant do much about it sorry and never intended to be groundbreaking or something, just some big spiders a bit more realistic proportioned for your rpgs or games

I verymuch like those. Looking at them with the Empire guy running reminded me of the movie 8 legged freaks.

I'd love to see some jumping spiders in a similar size, with room for and possibly with optional rider's legs/saddles.

Agree completely... they look good. I think reposing them so that only the front 2 legs were up would solve the problem.

I think I understand what your saying. However 2 pieces of A4 white paper would have been much better IMO for contrast.

I respect your skill and efforts, and meaning no i'll in my original post. I'm just a photographer being picky and offering my opinion.

Jump spiders are some of my favorite also They have some of the coolest spider eyes ever.
For next month its planed yet another massive big bug for Otherworld but I dont think its a jumping spider mate.

Squig_herder not a problem mate... I didnt take your post badly and even if you were trashing the spiders I would not take it badly, everyone has diferent tastes etc. I just wanted to make it clear that by posting my sculpts here doesnt mean I consider them ground breaking or the best thing since sliced bread or that my pictures are official or good .

As for green BG why do you need a extreme contrast with white on a miniature green for rgb screens? Making contrasts extreme does not help for a more enjoyable view and for some reason the blue BG's are used and abused in painted miniatures photos. SInce this is not painted and I wanted a monochromed thing I opted for this.
White may look nice on paper but on monitor screen its not that linear mate and most of the times the irradiated light offends your eyes, specially if you are looking for details.
Be picky all you want, because this way I actually learn something from you and its fun to debate these subjects... every good wargammer is picky by nature

Ah fair enough, shame though, they are very cute and interesting.

You could make some anyway, some for riders, some like hunting dogs...
