One of the most important parts of the technology required for creating power armor is the negative feedback system that would operate the actual motion of the armor's infrastructure. This was something even mentioned by Heinlein in Starship Troopers which is the first time that powered armor showed up on major literature.

It seems like we're making advances in that technology:

Now, we just need to strap some body armor on that sucker.

I think this came up in the off-topic forum a few months ago...

I think the intended utility is for freight handling?

Yea that thing has been around for a few years now. Its pretty cool, and obviously a step in the right direction for suits like that. The only drawbacks to these ideas, is the powersupply for them. We just dont have the batteries to power those properly.

Yeah, I saw that on TV a couple of years ago. It looks like it's coming along nicely.

Like you said, we just need some armor to go on it.

Considerably longer, probably. Batteries aren't going to advance in capacity enough to power the thing, so you'll need to strap an internal combustion engine on the back of the thing. That alone will eat up most of your weight budget, along with making it less stealthy than the Kool-Aid man in a wall factory AND rendering you completely dependent on the whims of your supply lines.

Slap a micro Jet engine on that sucker to power it and thus eliminate most of the "weight" issues for a onboard power plant.

Or a cold fusion reactor...

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

It's being funded by the US Army, it's the second generation model of it, it uses less energy and does more than the previous model, and they already have a design that lets it accept armor plating. Yes yes, us yanks will be the first space marines.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

I saw that 'best FMV in a video game' thing and I thought about putting that one in there. It's a great scene.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Sadly, it still needs to be plugged into a wall.

Yeah, I'd wager the idea behind it is more for rescue than for fighting. Nothing like having a guy who can lift a ton and take a few bullets pulling your troops out of a wreck.

As for combat, unless we have some sort of micro nuclear reactor to power it and for some reason the AI's have all gone rogue then there really isn't a need for power armour because we could just build robots.

And, the Assault Marine comes a little closer to a reality, too:

Now we just need the appropriate armor...

They need to move everything closer in to your apendages, and use the same thing the space marines use to power their suits nuclear power with really good rad protection in the pack then slap the armor plates on

You're going to need some serious power flow to enable a fully armoured suit. Just standard body armour weighs a heck of a lot and that is just for chest rig! You'd weigh the same as a small family car after you've gone the whole hog! It would be interesting to see just how darned big the fans would have to be to lift you fully armoured.

You'd need something better than a nuclear rig as all that it does is boil water to give you steam, you'll need something drastically different to give plain, vanilla power rather than just have a big steam engine strapped to your back.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

One of the lead researches on the project said something about using battery power due to advances in the output levels and lifetime of newer batteries...need to dig up where I read that...

Ironically, better power density than a nuclear genny is pretty much impossible. Of course, given that the smallest possible (non-RTG) nuclear reactor still weighs more than most cars...
