I found the WL hanging out near a guardian sq with spirit seer on a home objective not bad. EML and BL on the WL, EML in the guardians. Not the cheapest but puts out 3 S8 long range shots or 2 templates. If anything nasty gets close the WL can dish out 2 flamers then S10 attacks.
Shrieker just causes pinning IIRC..

Wraithlord: He's decent but not particularly mobile, which is his main weakness. He also has very few attacks in CC, so he can be tarpitted. I find he only works well in a foot slogging army, but in that case, your opponent has nothing to shoot with their anti-tank apart from him, so he goes down rather quickly. Take multiples to increase survivability and I've found they work really well with an Avatar. I've found a nearby warlock to be nice, but NOT necessary.
Wraithguard: Decent squad but expensive. They are very difficult to kill, so can work well at holding objectives. Their gun can also (with some luck) instakill anything, which is really nice against nids and other MC armies. Be careful, as terminators can tear them up really easily. IMO, they work best in a WS. You can quickly deliver them to within 12" so they can shoot, and if needed, they can get tangled up in CC to tie up an enemy squad for the remainder of the game.
Shrieker Cannon: This gun is awesome!!! Unfortunately, it only comes in a squad that will spend every turn running or being in CC. You'll maybe get one shot off a game... maybe. Coupled with loosing an attack to take this "upgrade", I find it to be the 2nd worst option available to Eldar (1st goes to Eldrich Storm, 3rd to Scorpion's Claw). Never take it.

I've been seriously considering an Iyanden army with WG and a WL. WG are really tough and really deadly...and really expensive. Throw them in cover by an objective or send them to hunt down any powerful unit. They SHOULD be able to take down tanks without too much trouble (always pen on a 5 or 6, glance on 3 or 4).

I dont think either of these units fit in very well with the overall theme of the eldar army - which is mobility, specialization, and awesome psykers. What do wraithguard/lord units specialize in? being hard to kill. thats not aggressive enough. you dont want units that are hard to kill, you want units that kill the badguys. dont be tough. be deadly. anyway these guys have pretty poor mobility and their firepower is just ok. wraithcannons are awesome guns but you cant take enough of them to make them work, and they're too short ranged. besides they have to get up close; being tough in close combat is nice but it doesnt help against power fists etc. they need more attacks or an invuln to be good in close combat. wraith lords are ok too but not hard to wound with plasma weapons and lascannons, which are pretty much everywhere these days.
My advice: dont use these guys. concentrate on what you're good at: hitting hard and fast. AF

Well, if you want a Iyanden army, then the core army could look like this:
10 WG
3 WL
1 Avatar
1 FortuneSeer
10 Harlies with kisses incl. Shadowseer
10 DA with defend, shimmershield
X*10 Guardians of whatever type
Its not too hard to play. It just rolls forward making use of the Avatar's fearless bubble.
The Harlies are there for counter-charge and the DA can hold up an enemy unit in cc when fortuned.

Tactically I understand what you are saying. Fluff wise, they are the Space Treemen for eldar's Space Elves. I think that the Dark Eldar are more of the specialists on being fast glass canons, where the eldar have specialists.
Wraith Guard I see as very similar to fire dragons. They both have 12" guns that ignore armor and hurt vehicles. Fire dragons are cheeper, better against vehicles with AP1, you can fit more in a wave serpent. Wraith guard can Instant Death anything, can still hurt Monoliths, are harder to kill with small arms.
I think that wraithguard are ok at the price that they are. The problem is that the T6 does not protect them from a lot of things, like powerfists and missiles. Plus with 1 attack they will never kill much in close combat.
You might be able to get their points back IF you kill a Land Raider or Monolith, or get lucky against a trygon, but other than that there is not much they can do.

Speaking of the Devil...I just played yesterday against a fiends new Eldar army. It contained not one but two Kings of the Dead ( Wraith Lords ) . Let us say that I was not amused. T8 is something beyond ridiculous. My CSM forces had meltaguns, plasmaguns and power fists aplenty but it gets really frustrating when your anti-tank weapons cause one wound on a 4 or 5+...

If you want to run wraithlords, the best way is to run three with EMLs and BLs. And stick them near Guardian defenders. THey can ravage both infantry, mech, and monstrous creatures, and they are not easy to kill. Much of your opponent's otherwise devastating firepower will be used over the course of a few turns to try and take these boys down. Meanwhile, the rest of your army ignores the brunt of enemy shooting attacks.
AS for wraithguard, but a squad of 5+Warlock in a wave sepent, and they become a really good bunker buster. They can also cut a swathe through the enemy's ranks and, like the wraithlords, occupy enemy fire. It's not a bad idea to run Eldrad in the same Wave Serpent as them, although he should not disembark with them.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy. |

This is the core of the old army type known as elfzilla. You take a lot of very tough models and give up the eldar mobility (in the most part). Three WL, and avatar and a unit of wrathguard bolstered by eldrad (or a vanilla farseer) is a radically different army from what most oppoenents will be thinking they are facing in an eldar army.
This army can do well in KP missions, and can often do well when there are only two objectives.
Yes, melta and other antitank weapons can kill the WL...but no they cant easily do so. Part of the eldar advantage with this sort of list is that very few opponents will have a good feel for this type of game. Play the same opponent several times and his game will improve a lot. It can be a very solid army, just be prepared for the downside.
This is going to be primarily a foot slogging army, so you are going to be at a severe disadvantage if the game involves several objectives spread over wide area. While it is possible to add a bit of speed in with the foot sloggers this will usually merely give your opponents antiarmor forces a real target. Dont expect 1-2 vehicles to survive at all; a bike unit or two might be an option however.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k). |
