Tough Tyrant Guard

UK

Hi all,

I thought I'd post the all-comers list I've been trialling for the past month or so and see how you rate it.

1x Hive Tyrant
2x twin-linked Brainleech Devourers, Hive Commander, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
225pts

1x Zoanthrope
60pts

1x Zoanthrope
60pts

3x Lictor
195pts

4x Tyranid Warrior
Bonesword, Lash Whip, Scything Talons, Toxin Sacks
200pts

18x Termagant
Fleshborer
90pts

10x Genestealer
Toxin Sacks
170pts

On the whole I've found it to be pretty solid. I've got plenty of alternative deployment (Infiltrating/Outflanking Genestealers, Chameleonic Lictors, optional Outflank on the Tyranid Warrior depending on the mission/opponent) that has a fairly reliable +1 to their roll to come on, which so far I've had great success in using to keep my enemy off-balance.

I know I know, Lictors. I was determined to make them work with this list... and they've actually been quite impressive (I'm going to start documenting my games so I can demonstrate their small-game abilities to anyone who's interested). In smaller games like these, there isn't as much firepower floating around and the board isn't so saturated with models - thse factors combine to give Lictors the room and the hiding places they need to work effectively (usually).

Anti-armour may seem a bit light at first, but between the Lictors, Tyrant shooting, Zoanthropes and Genestealer charges I can usually crack open transports as necessary. In smaller games, Land Raiders are much rarer (I've only faced two so far, both Crusaders) and the Monolith is hard to crack regardless. I'm tempted to replace the Zoanthropes with Hive Guard, but I quite like having their anti-MEQ Warpblast on-hand as well. That said, I have found myself frustrated by hostile psychic defences more than once. Hive Guard at least are very reliable.

Any and all comments are welcome.

I have to say I'm a little surprised at this list. Some things strike me as odd:

1. A walking Hive tyrant with no 2+ save or tyrant guard to protect him. I would always run one of these two options regardless of the points value of the game. Guard for the cover save, 2+ to reduce the effect of all but the heaviest of weapons and small arms fire. In truth at 1k I wouldn't even field a tyrant...way too expensive and you don't get full use out of his army wide bonuses since you have severly limited points.

2. Warriors. I just think they are too vulnerable nowadays to S8, especially large blasts. If you are going to run them make sure they have an attached IC or 2 to spread the wounds.

3. Lictors aren't bad per se, it's just that there are so many other options that are just better. The 195 you have spent on them could be better spent on hive guard, more zoanthropes, some spods, ymgarls etc...

Of course this is just my opinion. I would run a very different list at 1k, but I don't know how competitive your local meta is. Our local foreign gaming group is mostly competitive, with the Chinese locals not so much. I see your chief weakness not really being the lack of anti-tank, but how vulnerable it is. 2 zoanthropes are easily singled out by S8, same with warriors, same with the tyrant, same with the lictors. It's also not hard for a SW player to spam 15 MLs at 1k. They will still have room for mech tac squads and a rune priest. And there is very little you can do about them. Lootaz should have a scoring squad of shoota boys nearby to engage you, An IG blob would just laugh, etc...

As an example I am playing in a tournament in a couple of days and my allcomers 1k list looks like this:

Tyranid Prime
Rending claws
Lashwhips and Bonesword

3x hive guard
2x zoanthropes with spod
8x ymgarls

15x gaunts
Tervigon with catalyst
8 genestealers with broodlord

For AV penetrating. It's how I run my primes too. Just a personal thing I guess.
