In a game today I put a wound on a unit of two elite Tau Crisis suits...they have 2 wounds each...and then called for a moral check and my opponent said that he did not lose a model so no moral check was necessary...upon reading the rules it would seem he was right...but this flies in the face of some other ways some wounding tally's are computed...i.e. the suits have a total of four wounds so if you give them one they should take a moral check...wondering if some peeps would weigh in on this one...thanks...

The standard is not 25% of wounds but 25% of the models in a unit. BRB p44.

Page 44 is indeed clear. It is models, not wounds.

Just because you don't like it doesn't change it.

Fluffwise, a guy seeing his buddy drop dead in a bloody mess might freak out and run away, a guy seeing his buddy's suit take some damage but keep going isn't bothered.

maybe made even more courageous? Best pal takes a shot to the face and gets back up and charges headlong into a mass of the enemy with a vicious roar would steel anyones nerves.
Granted tau dont do courageous charges but you get the idea.

How about with an artillery unit? For example, in a unit of three zzap guns, one runtherd, one big mek, and 12 grot crewmen (15), I have lost three guns and one crewman (26.6% of the models); do I take a moral test?

[My thinking is, Yes, I do.]

How are you losing the zzap guns? They don't have wounds and they're not vehicles so I don't see how you would count/lose them in the first place. The rule is if a unit loses 25% or more of it models then it makes a morale test. In your example losing 1 crewman doesn't meet the requirements.

I suggest you read the rules for Artillery. You can lose the gun seperately from the crew - the guns themselves ARE vehicles.

The guns are vehicles and every hit against the unit is randomised between crew and gun.

I've never played against a unit like that before. Thank you for pointing out the rules for it.

But as to the question by my math the unit still isn't down 25%. 3 guns, 1 runt, 1 mek and, 12 crew = 17 models. Losing 4 doesn't equal 25%. I think the answer you're looking for is: it doesn't matter what the specific type of model lost is, only that the total number of lost models equals or exceeds 25%.

I think the person miscounted and came up with 15 not 17. Losing 4 of 15 would give you a morale check.

@Nosferatu,

You're right, I did miscount. Mea culpae (my bad)!

You're also right about the rule too; if I were in a gun crew, I would be pretty upset to see my gun die; it's the whole reason I'm there!

No. Artillery, Page 55, "Moralle & Fall Back Moves"

The guns are ignored for morale.

We do Courageous Tactical Retreats.

Back OT, it's dead folks, not wounds taken, or Wound Allocation wouldn't be as OP.
