Does warhammer ancients have a points system or is it just bring what you have and kick the s$@t out of each other?

It has a points system as per all Warhammer based rules.

You need to buy the appropriate army book for the force you have.

Yup. It plays like Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition I think without things like magic

Although it is recommended that you adjust point costs if cross booking armies

WAB2 is a bit more of its own rule set. Changes to ranks, flank arches, skirmishers - makes the game stand on its own.
