I just picked up my menoth battlegroup and it comes wiht...

o Warcaster High Exemplar Kreoss
o Crusader Heavy Warjack
o Revenger Light Warjack
o Repenter Light Warjack

I was wondering what would be the next step to expand. Also i am thinking of using a different caster and it is been brought down to either harbinger of menoth, vibe scrutator vindictus, or hierarch severius cause these models just look amazing. if i switched to one of those warcasters can i still use the three jacks i got in the battle group. Finally i was planning on having a mix between infantry units and Jacks for my army and prolly just of either 50 to 100 points or even more?

Thanks

Hey congrats on the new batletgroup, I would say before you start switching around warcasters try kreoss out. He is a solid starting caster, has a very good feat and a pretty good spell list. As far as your first unit goes I will start by recommending temple flame guard + unit attachment. They have a lot too offer, decent defense, shieldwall, cma and reach are all nice abilities for an inexpensive unit. Add in the ua's mini feat, ranked attack and continuous fire on their weapons and you have one of the best units in the game. Only 8 points and you get 12 guys with all those abilities, add in defenders ward from kreoss, severius or vindictus and you have a unit that is simply awesome.

Good luck with your new army and remember to have fun!

p.s. I forgot a min unit of choir is also very hand for those jacks.

Ok thanks for the advice also what is the difference between High Exempler Kreoss and Grand Exempler Kreoss

High exemplar kreoss is more anti-magic than grand exemplar, using Lamentation. Grand exemplar uses Castigate to stop arcnodes. HEK has a weapon that dispels, GEK has a spell that dispels and a weapon that slams or pierces armour.

HEK's feat knocks down the enemy, making them no longer block LOS and you auto-hit with melee, almost auto-hit with ranged and spells. Better for assassination runs.

GEK's feat gives all your guys extra melee attacks that auto-hit, so it's great for decimating the enemy's army.

I prefer GEK. His tier list is more knight-ish, but HEK's feat is more of a game-winner. I play warmachine with too much of a 40k mindset of "kill the enemy's army!" and so GEK more fits my playstyle.

i would pick up the menoth staples early on:

min unit of choir
1-2 vassals
1-2 mechaniks
covenant

and the popular merc musician

Rhupert, piper of ord.

possibly this for a slow grow:

15 pts:

High Exemplar Kreoss
Repenter
Revenger
Crusader
Choir of Menoth (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Vassal of Menoth

25 pts:

add temple flame guard unit (max) with the UA
add covenant of menoth

35 pts:

add unit of errants (max) with UA

50 pts:

swap crusader for Fires of Salvation
add bastions (max unit)
add wracks
add mechanik
add rhupert

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

I too bought the Menoth Battlebox and I added a unit of Cinerator (cuz I really liked their look and, well they do fire damage which I also found cool). I grabbed another Heavy Jack (liked the Reckoner so I went with him). A friend told me to borrow his minimum unit of choir for my first game this past Saturday. That choir was invaluable! I still lost but it was not a totally epic loss due to the choir.

I am lucky in that my FLGS has a large number of Warmachine/Hords players so while only playing one game so I was able to watch a number of games in play. The second thing I learned after learning the importance of the choir, is that a Vassal is right up there. Thus my next purchases that are already on order are a minimum unit of Choir and a Vassal.

Ultimately what I found as my own recent experience is that the battlebox allowed for a 15 point game but all I really needed to round it out into something very playable and able to perform decent was a minimum unit of choir a unit and another heavy jack. I could have easily gone with another unit rather than a heavy jack. Popping pKreoss (the battlebox caster) feat was just plain fun against my Cryx opponent.

As for me I was thinking of quickly jumping to using the Harbinger as my warcaster but after acutually playing pKreoss I think I'll stick with him for a bit and really get a feel for him before switching up my warcaster. I still want the Harbinger as my next 'caster but found I don't need her right away to enjoy playing as a newbie.

I'm in the same position. Just starting to play, I play in small skirmishes with a friend.
I have the Menoth battlegroup, 1 vassal, and 2 choir guys. We're growing our armies slowly, both so that we can learn the rules at an even pace, and so that we don't have too many unpainted models.

My buddy is playing Heavy Warjack Khador, and he picked up his third heavy (the 3 in 1 plastic kit).

I want to get an infantry unit that will work well with my caster Kreoss, and will do well in this match up, because frankly that bombard cannon has been destroying me.
Above someone recommended temple flameguard as a great first unit, but there must be something about them I do not see, because they don't look at all interesting or special.

They are not special on the rule side, but they are cheap(4/ 6) and durable. Therefore they make excellent speed bumb and if you have access to the defender's ward or other defensive buff they become a head ache for the opponent. They are probably the best cheap unit in the game for their purpose.

You have enough to start right here. Warmachine is not like Warhammer in that you must collect an army first. Play with the intro boxset on its own, against other intro boxsets. Get a feel for what the 'jacks and Kreoss can do.

Afterwards followv three simple bits of advice.

1. There is no one correct build or build order. Warmachine is well balanced, so get what you want.

2. The units in Prime are all you need for now. Even most veteran players go back to the units in Prime, this counts for all four main factions. There are exceptions and you can collect just about anything, but as a healthy rule it still stands. You can simplify your buld by sticking to Prime for now, it wont let you down.

3. dont overinvest in 'jacks and units, get as many warcasterrs as you can. Warmachine is about build and combinations trumping each other. a build that is good against one list is bad against another. You will be advised to keep your army generic, buying lots of everything is expensive anyway. Really you only need one unit of each unit type, plus one or two more of your favourites. However rather than swapping out maxed out Flameguard for maxed out Zealots you could have one unit ofv each permenatly and radically change your army by changing onwe model: the Warcaster. Get as many Warcasters as you like and can afford, one each of everythign else, except jacks, its ok to double up on some of them at an early stage.

the above three 'rules' dont solve everything but will give you a jolly good start. The only other thing to add is that way down the line you might want to duplicate units do so in conjunction with a warcaster or solo that boosts those units. As you collect warcasters and solos you will see who they are. This can get expensive and your army can far exceed what you can bring to the tabletop (PP did their marketing well) its also avoidable if you stick with the thre rule approach. For purely economic reasons I restrticted my collection to 0-1 each infantry unit, 0-2 warjacks with almost every solo and warcaster. even then I do not collect many of the above if not in Prime, except warcasters. My army could be somewhat better, but only at the cost of a lot more money investment, wheras it is versatile enough for 50 to 100pt play as it is.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
