I wanted them to look like lifeless black orbs.

Nice scheme.
If you want to do the lifeless black orb that's a cool idea, but you need to give it some kind of highlight or varnish to make it pop out. Even if you tap the edge with an extreme highlight (think polished obsidian or wet ink) you'll have the right idea.

A very light dot of straight black ink could give you that lifeless look... Or another dark ink suck as blue or red to give it a different shade.
It's a very bright color scheme(not to my taste), but cleanly done..

To be honest I don't like the colours you've chosen,
however they have a suitable amount of contrast with each other, and the detail is acceptable. Thumbs up :]

More highlights on the carrot snake.... I'm not being mean, its just carrot colored. Great painting for a first attempt, and i'm not being patronizing when i say that- it really is good.

The green is a little bright for me, but the paintjob is nice. How are you going to do the base?

Most people try their new scheme out on the rank and file, not the most expensive gribbly they can get their hands on!
Looks good though. Has a very "Don't with me, I'll kill you!" look, like poisonous bugs tend to have.
