Subject: Speed Freaks, how to make them competitive?
|

So I was wondering, what units, if any, make a Speed Freaks army competitive? It seems like a squad of Nob Bikers with a Warboss on a bike can be deadly. What else works? In the 2000 point army i started building, I have 11 Powers Klaws, which seems like more than enough anti-tank. So what I am looking for is ideas on what units work well in a Speed Freaks army, and when and how to use them effectively. So please respond, because my fun side wants to play Speed Freaks, but my competitive side is telling me Wagon Rush.

I'm not an Ork player but I'll still try to help.
What about those buggies with some kind of TL weapon? Rokkits for anti-tank or Skorchas for anti-infantry?
Ork Boyz in red Trukks seems like the best start. Fit as many as you can in your list and give the Boyz Slugga/Choppa and a PK Nob. Maybe take that reroll LD pole as well since you're only 12 strong
I could see a unit of Burna Boyz being fairly useful as well, huge amounts of anti-infantry and the ability to switch to Power Weapons means that you aren't totally useless against MCs or MEQs either.
For heavies, does anyone use the Looted Wagon? It seems like a fairly cheap way to get some decent ordnance in a list.

Looted Wagon is a sub-sub-optimal choice. Trukks are sub-optimal. Battlewagons are optimal.

Oh not that argument again. Trukks are not sub optimal, when used right. If you only have a couple trukks, you will get your teeth kicked in. But take 5 or 6 and your rocking, specially with a KFF in there somewhere to give them 4+ cover saves.
I play with a looted wagon w/boomgun on it from time to time and its weird. Some games it just owns what I aim it at, and others it just misses and does nothing. Infact one game the damn thing landed on a squad of mine and just toasted those poor boys Im actually thinking of trying a list with 3 of them, and see how that goes. They are GREAt if you get them to do what you want but that doesnt happen all the time.
Other then that, I agree looted wagons are pretty much a no go, they cost more then a trukk, and are BARELY more armored but go slower.....so....... dont take them for transports.
Ive heard if you take alot of bikes, and rokkit boys you can pack a pretty serious punch but I dont care for rokkit boys either and never use them. The key to any speed freak list is to make sure that everything you have is hauling ass in or on some type of vehicle. Youll have a bunch of battlewagons, trukks (Or bikers) and just be move move move until you hit the battle lines.
Something I like doing is make sure most of my main assault hits in one of the flanks on your opponent. That damage that will do in 1 or 2 turns will make the other guy panic a bit. Its great fun seeing all those trukk boyz dump out on 15ish SM or the like.

My idea for speed freaks? Bikes and buggies. Wazdakka is pretty good, and having regular bikes as troops is decent, if you bring enough. The fire support can be handled well with rokkit buggies, and bikers and biker nobs can fill the PK quota.
Trukks are in fact fragile things, and relying on them too hard set you up for a bad day if you draw the wrong opponent. Battlewagon spam is a different army in my mind than speed freaks. It plays quite differently.

It does play differently for sure, but BW spam is lumped into the speed freak thing simply because its a mobile army. But I agree, imo a for real SpeedFreak army is bikes and buggies.
Im tellin ya, ever since I started using rokkit buggies instead of koptas, Ive been a happy camper. Hell I used them to show my wife why its ALWAYS smart to give her hive tyrant that 2+ save. It died the beginning of turn 2, and did nothing more then move Im not gunna lie that was a nice feeling for me, since the thing has been a pain in my ass ever since

I've always like buggies. The twin linked rokkits on fast vehicles is probably the best platform for it. Sure, they die easy, but they are cheaper than koptas. (45 for TL rokkit koptas, 35 for buggies)

Well, I'll answer with more than three sentences.
If you want reliable defense, BWs are superior. You sacrifice speed for that extra security. In such a list, you add Trukks as a supplemental transport.
If you want a pure Speed Freaks list, six Trukks doesn't sound bad SO LONG AS YOU APPLY THE CONCEPT OF TARGET SATURATION. 6 Trukks plus 9 Buggies (and you can take Wazdakka and have six slots of Warbikers if you want for troops). It all depends on how you use it.
However, I find Battlewagons are better than Trukks. Are Trukks useless? No. But I find more use for Battlewagons than Trukks.

Thats why I laugh at people that swear trukks are junk and to never be used. When Im in the mood for CC smashing, I run a boat load of trukks and usually kick alot of ass. I agree that the BW is a better option but you can take so many trukks. The BW is just a great vehicle though. You can load it up with guns, dump a whole crap load of boyz on the field, carry burnas and laugh at everyone, have a mob of av13 lootas popping things left and right, or stick on a deff rolla and just ram the piss out of a LR. You cant argue with the versatility the BW has. Totally agree with ya

I use Trukks to back up the Battlewagons in assaults.
10 Nobz pile out and assault something, next turn (when everything has moved 6" to get into Base to Base contact) the boyz show up to charge that unit.
Any models in Base to Base contact with another model (at the start of that turn) must attack that model. So the unit that you charged cannot fight the boyz, they must fight the nobz.
I have also done vice versa against things like walkers with DDCCW...

I have to admit, I miss the old Infantry battles of 4E compared to this 5E wonderland of APCs/IFVs everywhere. It's like we jumped from WWI to WWII.
