I got first turn and took it. Fifty kept almost everything in reserve except Eldrad and his unit of pathfinders who entrenched themselves in cover.

Turn 1
Celestin knew the Eldar were continuing their hit and run tactics and that their attacks were growing stronger. He vowed to crush them personally and assumed command of his most decorated Terminator veterans to ensure the task was finished...

The SM armour rolls on with the prime mission of crushing Eldrads position. Fast attack sweeps from Marine left in an outflanking attempt. The Assault Marines stay in reserve. Long range fire slams into the pathfinders, but they all make their saves. With nothing else to fire at, I pass the turn.
The Eldar Position themselves accordingly, matching my out flanking manoeuvre with their own bikes. Eldrad guides and fortunes a couple of units and his firing begins. Most heavy weapons plink harmlessly off the LR until the final lance shot from one of the serpents penetrates and destroys it. Damn. Other fire is concentrated on the Land speeders and bikes. I lose a LS, the other is immobilised and one biker buys it too. Other fire patters harmlessly off of the Terminators armour. Score; SM 1/1 Eldar

Top of turn 1

Landraider buys it.

Bikes engage one another.

Turn 2
Well that was a disaster. The Terminators now have to footslog across the centre of the ruined town and my LS's were shot to pieces. Thankfully I called for reserves and get the assault marines. They deep-strike next to Eldrad and flame the xenos. They lose their cover saves thanks to the burning promethium and five buy it. The pass morale and stick around. I run the terminators and shuffle my transports to try and get round the wrecked LR. My bikers open up on the Banshees and remove three of them. The Rifleman dread gets a lucky side armour shot on the falcon and wrecks it. A few foot slogging Avengers fall to some long range fire and 2 Eldar bikes are toasted.
The Eldar response is two-fold, they consolidate into the middle with the serpent and the reapers. Most of their fire is drawn by the recently arrived assault marines. The reapers kill three or four, some Avengers pick off another couple, leaving Eldrads unit to finish off the rest. However, this mass of fire has drawn their attention away from the marauding terminators in the town square... On the other flank, the Eldar bikes finish off my bikers, leaving them free to sweep into my lines. A long rage shot from a Serpent destroys the PC dread. Score; SM 1/1 Eldar

Assault Marines arrive as the Falcon burns.

Turn 3
The Assault Marines had bought me a whole turn and I planned not to waste their sacrifice. The termies moved closer to the ruins that held the pathfinders. A lascannon finally finds a way through the Avengers wave serpent and it explodes spectacularly. Five of the Avengers perish in the blast. The Pred annihilates the rest despite their cover and assorted fire takes down another Eldar bike. The rifleman wipes a Reaper squad. A Razor picks a path through the rubble to try and get a scoring unit across the board. The terminators will have to assault over difficult terrain and need a six to hit home, which they get! (Payback for the LR) The Eldar hit first and Eldrad takes out a LC terminator. In response the Pathfinders are wiped and Eldrad is down to a single wound. However, he passes his break test and stays!
The Eldar now are looking in a precarious position. The bikes fire a salvo into a tac squad holding my home objective and kill three. The Marines pass Morale. The Dragons Wave serpent moves across the board to try and get closer to my objective. His reserves are called in and the Scorpions outflank to intercept my advancing razorback. Some avengers come in from the back and look to consolidate inside a building. Maugan Ra and Banshees run towards Eldrads position. In assault Eldrad is wiped and Striking scorpions assault and glance the side armour of the R/back to death, removing the storm bolter, the heavy bolter and immobilising it. Score; SM 1/0 Eldar

Eldrad is buried under a pile of rampaging terminators.

Mid turn three

Pred targets Avengers.

Turn 4
Terminators have no choice, but to stay put on objective until help can arrive. The marines in the immobilized Razor disembark out the back. (No other access points could be used and they run to try and find away to reach the captain. Two combat squads thin down the banshees accompanying Mauhgan Ra to just the exarch and one other. Ra also takes a wound! The Rifle man turns and unloads into the scorpions killing four, then charges in killing another. They hit back, but can't penetrate the armour. They make both morale checks and stick around. All of my heavy weapons try to take down the serpent, but the rolls aren't with me.
The Eldar bikes move to within touching distance of my home objective, and continue firing, but I make all cover saves. The last mobile wave serpent flies behind my lines and disgorges the dragons. However, there are three combat squads and a full tac squad close by in a rhino, so I still have enough to hold my objective. I hope... The Dragons vaporise the Rhino, all marines make it out in good order. Maugan Ra and the banshees keep gunning for the terminators, but their run roll comes up with a 1. His other troops keep a wary distance from the terminators for good reason. All of fifty's combined shooting brings down another LC terminator. Score; SM 1/0 Eldar

Ra tries to make it into combat with the Termies.

Bikes and Serpent, close in my home objective.

Dread locked with Scorpions whilst the immobilised R/back smokes.

Turn 5
My Librarian, who had done nothing all game, unleashes avenger on the bikes and a flamer opens up on them also. two fall, three left. They pass morale. The Librarian and co. charge into them and reduce them to a single model, finally, they give up the ghost and flee. I run a combat squad across the square to try and close in on the eldar objective. The Tac squad now without their Rhino fire bolt-pistols then charge the Dragons wiping them. I try to finish off the serpent, but again that penetrating hit eludes me.
Fifty has few troops left now, but he moves them all towards his home objective, putting them within contesting and charge range of the Termies. Maugan Ra and Banshees try for an assault over difficult terrain in a last gamble, but they fall short by an inch or so. He rams his Serpent right up to my objective, contesting it. I need a turn six... Score; SM 0/0 Eldar

I roll for it, and get a 2. Game over... Draw!

The indestructible Serpent contests my home objective.

Jet bikes are dispatched, but it won't affect the result.

We did play out a turn six, and I finally wrecked the serpent and the termies were able to multicharge the avengers/banshees/Ra wiping them. Which would have given me 2/0... Ah well. I can't complain, them's the breaks!
Fifty's list was dependant on what he had painted, so it wasn't ultra competitive and I also wanted to try a range of troops/vehicles too; hence the assault marines! Still, by the end, I only had an immobilised R/back and a Pred left and we are still both discovering what works well for our style etc. For me, the Rifleman dread and the SS?TH Termies were awesome. Not so good was LR, got popped turn one and hindered my ability to deploy effectively. (It blocked the main route across the square and I never really recovered my position.

The Hypothetical final combat between Captain/Termies and Ra/Banshees/Avengers

Also, Kudos to Fifty for the amazing board. It was a pleasure to rage battle on!

Celestin watched the Xeno ship screech off into the distance, the only remnant of the alien army. Around him and his terminators lay dozens of Eldar dead. He knew that artifact he had recovered was only a part of what they were fighting for, and though it pained him, he also knew that the disappearing Serpent contained the other half of the STC design.

The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

Oops, I only just saw this report.

It was a really fun game. Mark and I have now played three times - once in Canterbury, and twice at mine. All have been good games. It is nice to play on a decent board, which I can supply, with a whole batch of ruins supplied by Mark, as I do not have any buildings of my own. (In the process of making Eldar buildings, but it is slow going).

I was lucky to have my Serpent survive to contest his objective, but I had been fairly careful with it. I had planned to sacrifice both it and the Fire Dragons it contained to take out the Land Raider, but once I did not need to do that any more, I kept it in a semi-reserve position.

I made a few basic errors with some shooting by Maugan Ra and his squad, which allowed Mark to remove bikes and deny me the charge. I also forgot to Doom and Guide before the first few bits of shooting at the Assault Marines.

Playing 2500 points was good, as it allowed us to pick quite a few non-essential units. I've never used Striking Scorpions before, for example, and they were fairly pivotal in preventing Mark getting troops to my objectives.

Turn 6 would actualy have been a 1-0 win for Mark, as I remembered his Termies can only contest my objective, not hold it. I never had a real chance of contesting his with anything but my Wave Serpent though, which he would have wiped out easily in turn 6.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.
