The trend in local 40k (and who knows, maybe the whole world of 40k) seems to be field as many ML as possible to win. just shoot shoot shoot shoot etc. local tournis have lists with
30 terminators (troops)
3x5 ml devestator squads
or
9 typhoon speeder
3x5 Ml devestators
tons of troops in transports etc
the list goes on and on. this unoriginal style of gaming seems to be taking over here and its pretty dissapointing. Sit and fire volley of ML at each other. Roll dice. Whoever has the most ML wins. Boring. The same old spam. Anyone have any thoughts on scenarios or comp scoring that could be used to make taking the same old boring lists less appealing.

I'm mister IG and I can field

4 ML in HQ

132 ML in troops

9 ML in Fast attack

and a bunch of tanks.

I win!

Yeah, it gets boring.

I don't like rocket launchers very much. My luck with them is fickle at best. The only reason I have them in my Crimson Fists is because the old RTB01 and 2nd ed Marine boxes only came with rocket launchers for heavy weapons. I think they're a waste in my Guard army when I could be having Autocannons instead, which are way more fun.

But I don't even go near tournaments so don't listen to me.

How 4? 2HQ is the max and each HQ can only have 1 ML each.

Just curious.

I hate missile launchers! Specialize or fail is my motto!

Lascannons for anti tank, plasmacannons for heavy infantry, autocannons and heavy bolters for light infantry.

I dont have a single missile launcher in my entire guard army (ignoring HKMs)

Might as well be 4 with the number of Heavy weapons IG can take

So what do you do that is different that breaks that tired model?

Want a change? Take a swarm army and bum rush the flanks. Once your in close combat, missle launchers are pretty much out of the picture.
Nothing worse then having a weapon that you can't shoot...

I don't know about some of those choices, I think you should throw the BS flag on some of those plays.

Its just the newest fad. I wouldn't loose sleep over it. A Mathhammer player figures out how to win a game before the minis are even put on the table, and every Meta-gamer with access to the internet reads the list, runs out and buys the FoTM unit in bulk so they can enjoy their wingasams for a few months.

In a couple months someone is going to figure out some way to make every guardsman count as a multiwound MC with Voidmissile machine guns and EBAY will be flooded with ML troops on the cheap.

"All right, boyz, 'ere's da plan: Win. An' if we lose, it's your fault... 'cause you didn't follow da plan."

Sounds like you are playing with not nearly enough terrain.

Remember 25% and a mix of LOS and non LOS blocking. I truly doubt you are achieving this if those are your games.

I think I run the most MLs out of any gamer in my local scene and I only have 12 at maximum. So, although it is all over the internet and perhaps the tourney scene (i wouldn't know b/c I don't attend tourneys) I do not think it is AS prevalent as it may seem.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

MLs are the best cheap anti-tank marines can field, so that tends to be the way they go, and the ability to fire frag missiles is a rarely used bonus. IG can field autocannons, which are better for doing the light tank/transport killing that MLs do that is so vital in the ridiculously overmeched 5th ed environment. The fact of the matter is that giving long fangs/devastators/whatever costs so much more than giving them MLs for marines for a minor increase in vehicle killing power that it just isn't worth doing. Combine that with the fact that being able to destroy light armor is crucial in 5th and really determines the victor and behold, marine missile spam.

Appreciate all the feedback. I just think that this kind of spam is getting old. I enjoy comp scores in gaming because spam like this is less likely.
@ Grot 6- what do i do that breaks this mold. I try to do stuff where i take lists that have a little bit of everything. its a fun varied force. I would love for a range of different scenarios to be posted by GW but right now we have only 3. howabout 6 in the next edition. I agree with most people that eventually some new net list will become popular. i am kinda hoping that the re introduction of DE will mix things up some. They used to be absolute marine killers and if they introduced a rock paper scissors aspect to the game by making marines an easy loose scenario because or some of their interaction in the tourni scene and they pushed different builds, then that would be a good thing.

They did write a whole book of extra missions. It's quite good.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

@OP: Don't hate the player, hate the game.

As previously mentioned the MLs are simply a good deal and a strong response to AV11 spam. You don't see many BA player running Dev spam. Why? No need because there are better choices in the dex. Simple as that.

I'd also like to mention that I have been using ML dev's/long fangs for a very long time. I was being called an idiot on these forums for months as mech was just being recognized as the "meta game" and people everywhere jumped on the Salamander band wagon. I stayed true and looky looky now everyone runs ML spam.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.
