Subject: Double Tourney Tactics- IG paired with Daemons
|
 |
Drop Trooper with Demo Charge
|
My friend (Daemons) and I (IG) will be fighting side by side in a local doubles tourney. The rules are: 1k points for each player, shared force org slots, mandatory 1 troop and 1 HQ slot per player; special army rules do NOT transfer between armies. Between the two of us, we have no idea what each of our lists should look like to compliment the other. What we were leaning towards is that I'll be a gunline and also take care of tanks whilst he runs in and bashes faces in melee. So I turn to you, asking for your opinions and expertise.
Everything I have to make a list out of:
- Company command squad (and several spec. weapons)
- 2 platoon command squads
- up to 8, 10 man squads of infantry
- 3 autocannons, 3 mortars, 2 missile launchers, and one lascannon
- 10 stormtroopers
- 1 plasma sentinel
- 1 LRBT w/ lascannon
- 1 demolisher w/ heavy flamer
- 2 chimeras
- 1 valkyrie or vendetta
What my friend has (going from memory here, sorry):
- 1 masque
- 6 flamers
- 20 to 30 bloodletters
- 1 greater daemon of khorne (cant remember name)
- 1 DP of Tzeentch
- 1 DP of Nurgle
- 6 screamers
- 20 horrors and 1 changeling
- 2 soulgrinders
- 2 bloodcrushers
I don't have too good of an idea of what armies will be showing up, but I expect several Space Marines, Orks, and Nid armies; also a couple IG and Eldar perhaps. Tau, Necrons, and Daemons, CSM, and Inquisition forces are not very common, but not entirely unexpected. Both of us would prefer to avoid purchasing new models. Thanks in advance for your help!

One problem I'm having with squading up the two different tanks is the large range difference. Maybe I should pick one type or the other; both LRBTs or demolishers? I can always mod one of them.

The strength of a daemon army is their invuln saves and close combat. Your IG have the armor and shooting. Let him go melee and tank it up while you blast away.

Some of his shooting combos could be nice too - the Masque of Slannesh + flamers of Tzeentch = win.

The Masque's Pavane capabilities should be loads of fun for the LRBTs/Demolishers.

I think the biggest thing that the Daemons bring for IG is a good counter-assault unit.
I would try to focus your armies into shooting armies and keep a few assault units spread around to disrupt the standard counter to IG lists of assault everything.
IG should go with a tank heavy build with lots of Chimera/Leman Russ/Vendettas etc
Daemons should pack a few squads of 'Crushers and a GUO as counter assault/bullet sponge units and take Soulgrinders for more armor saturation. For troops you could go with almost anything, PB to camp objectives, 'Letters or Daemonettes to claim enemy objectives or Horrors to provide more mobile shooting and a cover save infront of your infantry.

Unfortunately, I'm not all that familiar with IG, so I can't advise you on what to take.
But, I do play gunline Eldar and have teamed up with Daemons, so let me give you some general advice:
You need lots of long-range firepower. Daemons main weakness is that turn that they deep strike on and can't do much else. Your goal should be to soften up your opponents enough in the first turn so that the Daemons can survive in large quantities.
If you can pull that off, your ally can pretty quickly secure the battle for a win!
What order your turns go in is going to drastically effect the game. If you go first, your army won't take many casualties, as the deamons will be out protecting you during your opponent's turn. If they go first, you'll take very heavy casualties, as it is 2 vs 1 for their turn.
Resist the urge to start everything in reserves! If you do that, Daemons will get shot to pieces before your army makes it onto the board.
Allying with Daesoms can be really tricky, because of their deep striking rules, but can pay off if you plan things out and get a bit of luck.

Thanks for all the answers everyone! So... I've sorta devised a list
- Plain old CCS with snipers, meant to camp out
- 2 vets with meltas in chimeras
- 3 infantry squads
- 3 mortars
- 2 missile launchers and a lascannon HWS
- plain demolisher w/ flamer
- Valkyrie w/ rocket pods
all comes out to exactly 1000 pts.

I'm thinking that having your IG sitting back and the daemons assaulting is going to split you up too much. I would play a fairly mobile IG force, set up to get close to the enemy and take out as many transports as possible so that the daemons can hit your enemy hard once they drop in.
With that in mind
CCS, 1 Lascannon (Alternatively, x4 Plasma)
2 Meltavet Squads
Chimmy for 1 Meltavet Squad
1 Platoon (x4 Flamer Command, 3 Infantry Squads with Autocannons)
Chimmy For PCS
Vendetta (1 Meltavet Squad here)
Demolisher
Battle Tank (maybe, depending on whether you want 2 soulgrinders or not) (I would replace it with a hellhound variant with a hull multimelta, or another vendetta, or a Manticore)
That gives you almost exactly 1000 pts. The point is to close with the enemy, taking out transports and vehicles, and providing a salient threat. When the daemons come in, they can engage the enemy straight away, and your units will draw fire from the more expensive/specialized daemon units.
As for the daemon player, 1-2 Soulgrinders with Phlegm is probably a good start. For HQ, the Masque will allow you to clump the enemy units to great effect for your templates, and your IG Tankbusting should fix the whole "Mech ignores Pavanne" issue. Fill to taste with horrors, bloodletters, and flamers as everyone has suggested.

Seems like an awful amount of anti-infantry firepower to me. Daemons excel at killing other infantry units but have very limited anti-tank at range. For my money, this means you need to bring the tank busters. Autocannons and Manticores would be a good start, maybe supported by some Chimera since 3x S6 shots isn't horrible against light armor.

Alright, so what I'm getting from all of this so far is:
- Tanks, use a bunch of em.
- I need to be on Anti Tank duty
- Keep on the move, no need to be a static gunline
- Daemons will take care of infantry, also act as my protection against assaults
I'll get together with my bud and run this all past him. I appreciate all the help!

I think you're on the right track.
That and remember to have fun, that is so important that its actually in the rulebook!
