Since I just joined this site I hope you can forgive any misshaps I make during my first post here, but anyway, here it goes:
I've been playing the Dawn of War games for a few years, but I never got to play the tabletob, anyway I got addicted to the fluff so I've read almost any stuff I got in my hands withouth paying so I eventually workep up a theory:
The Chaos Gods are active in the 40k universe, despite their rivalry amongst each other, they can identify a common threat. The first of these threats was the Emperor. When the Emperor was neutralized at the end of the Horus Heresy, this threat was neutralized. However, the gods had realized that they would need an active reserve in the real space, which they could use in an emergency situation. After this, they took an active hand in forming the Legions to their image, but they needed a man to lead these forces in a case of emergency. This man was the first captain of the Sons of Horus-legion.
Since the Chaos Gods need humans and other conscious species' to preserve their life, they would have to preventent the creatures withouth any warp presence from destroying the ones with it. The ultimate purpose of Abaddon has never been the destruction of the Imperium. The ultimate purpose of Abaddon is to act as a Warmaster of Chaos so he can destroy the true threats to the warp gods, the Necrons and the Tyranids. This might have been posted before, if it has, just post about it

Interesting take on the fluff, incorrect as it is.
Especially since Tyranids and Necrons are a very new threat. The traitor legions were active, destroying Imperial space before Tyranids arrived, and before Necrons started waking up.

My interpretation was that chaos awaits eagerly the arrival of a fifth (yeah, i know they killed off one or two already) god born from the psychic turmoil of mankind. A little war and bloodshed, a little angst and lust, stirred up by Abby and his mates will just keep the pot boiling nicely...
That being said, the necrons / nids could prove big trouble for chaos if they get too feisty.

I kinda Figured Abaddon's Ulitmate Purpose was to just fail, because he is really good at doing so.
I think the true purpose of Abaddon, is to destroy the Imperium, but he just rolls nothing but ones. Every one of his Crusades has been against the Imperium. He could also just be trying to fight his way to the Imperium to finish off the Emperor, because he is still Technically alive. If he did destroy the Imperium, there would still be Humans around. They would be less in number and could be used as Livestock to keep Chaos thriving.

Yeah, there's a reason he's been given the nickname Failbaddon.
As for the "purpose" of the legions... I don't think the gods value them enough to really give them such a strong purpose. They just use them like they do any other tool. A valuable tool, but still just a tool.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

The Emperor hasn't been neutralized and is active within the warp due to his considerable mental presence

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

I think the chaos gods didn't make the legions, but chose the ones they wanted for themselves. Basically Tzeentch called dibs on the thousand sons, slaanesh- emperor's children, nurgle- death guard and khorne- world eaters. Automatically Appended Next Post: Whether or not the chaos gods care for their these legions now depends on the chaos god.

The gods of chaos place their bets and throw their champions into battle on the same scale that we roll dice and send our little metal models of them into battle. Although the analogy doesn't quite stretch to what happens when you have to glue one of your guys' legs back on after he falls off the table...
